Rara (Jessica Mila) was born very different from her sister Lulu (Yasmin Napper).
Rara follows the genes of her father who has black skin, curly hair and a fat body.
While Lulu has a physical appearance like her mother, white, half-faced, and straight
hair. Since childhood, Rara has often been compared to her sister and she feels
indifferent about it. After all, he already has a girlfriend, namely Dika (Reza
Rahadian) who wants to accept Rara as she is.
Until one day, when Rara has to replace her boss at the office, the owner of the
company where she works, Kelvin (Dion Wiyoko), asks Rara to improve her
appearance. Because according to him, Rara must represent the company with a
new appearance.
Rara was trying hard to change her appearance as best as possible. On the other
hand, Dika is also afraid that if Rara changes her appearance, she will leave Dika and
turn into a figure that Dika does not know.
Besides Rara, who is insecure about her body condition, there is Dika, who is
insecure, Rara has changed, then Lulu, who is insecure with bad comments about
herself on Instagram, George (Boy William) who is afraid of losing followers and
many more.
In my opinion, this film very honestly depicts people's fears through its characters.
We can see and maybe feel right with one of the characters because they have the
same problem. From this film and the depiction of the insecurity of each character,
we can look in the mirror and introspect ourselves to be more grateful for what we
have.
One thing that makes this film special is the totality of all the crew involved in it.
Especially for Jessica Mila. For the sake of this film, Mila is willing to increase her
weight up to 10 kilograms so that Rara's role looks as natural as possible. Mila is not
afraid of the stereotypes and scorn of netizens about her physical condition, because
in the end Mila succeeded in impressing the audience with her role as Rara.
Besides that, I also give my thumbs up for Reza Rahadian's relaxed acting and
doesn't even look like he's acting. Everything goes naturally as if there is no burden.
The jokes he throws, the jokes, and even his speaking style is very smooth, not like
it's made up.
The supporting cast, especially the comedians, also make this film not boring. Their
simple speaking style to the jokes they put out made me feel at home watching this
film without even glancing at the clock.
Imperfect is a pretty sweet year-end film. This film opened the eyes of many people
to how painful body shaming is. One sentence that mocks someone's physical
condition not only affects the physical itself, but also the mentality of the person
who gets ridiculed
Through this film I learned a lot about gratitude. Not only grateful for the physical
condition that I have, but also grateful to have people around me who are willing to
accept me no matter what physical condition I have.
Like the tagline of this film, “Turn insecure into gratitude”, it really becomes a
mantra for women so that they will accept their physical condition as it is as a
priceless gift from God.
