What is honesty?

Ms Priya
LVEP Intermediate
President Abraham Lincoln
(Honest Abe)

• 16th President of the

United States
• They called him "Honest
Abe" because he was
always honest with
people.
HONESTY is...
• Is telling the truth and being truthful.
• It is dishonest to lie and hide the truth.
• Sometimes, being honest can be a hard thing to do
• But do remember that by being honest,
• it shows that you are an honest person that people can
always trust and rely on
Seven Great Reasons to Tell the Truth
1. Telling the truth lets everyone know what really happened. There's less of a
chance of misunderstanding, confusion or conflict
2. Telling the truth protects innocent people from being blamed or punished.
3. Telling the truth allows everyone to learn from what happened
4. You usually get into less trouble for telling the truth than for lying ( and
getting caught in it later)
5. People tend to trust and rely on you
By being honest...
6. You don’t have to tell ( and remember) more lies to keep your story straight
7 . You gain a reputation for being truthful- a trait most people value
Your CHARACTER....
is defined by what you do
Every choice you make helps define the kind of person you are choosing to be
Good character requires doing the right thing, even when it is costly or risky
You don’t have to take the worst behavior as a standard for yourself. Instead
you can choose to be better than that
What you do matters, and ONE person can make a BIG difference
The Payoff?
•It makes you a better person
and makes the world a better
place
What would you do?
• In small groups, discuss a solution to these situations
• 1. With no one home, you decide to play indoor basketball.
Accidently, the ball bounces too high and knocks over an expensive
photo frame. You find the glass shattered and you know it won't be
an easy task to fix on your own. At the same time, you could
probably pin it on your younger brother or dog knowing that you
could get away with it. Time is of the essence and your mother is on
her way home. What do you do?
• Your dad makes a deal with you that if you excel in your Math
exam, he would buy you the thing you have been pleading with
him to get you for months. The day of test arrives, but you know
that you have not studied enough for it. On the other hand, you
are aware that your classmate is the smartest student in the class.
You ponder on the choice to cheat of her test as she sits next to
you. Do you? And if not why?
Discussion Questions
• 1. How do you know you can trust someone?
• 2. How important is trust in your relationships with your friends & family?
• How would these relationships be affected if you found out someone was
• lying to you.
• 3. What are the benefits of being a trustworthy person? How do you benefit
from the trustworthiness of others?
Reflection
1. Name one way we can show
HONESTY at home
2.Name one way we can show
