WLAN Application in Video Surveillance Scenarios

◼ WLAN application scenarios in video

surveillance
As a cost-effective and easy-to-deploy solution,
WLAN backhaul is widely applied in the video
surveillance fields such as:
1. Mining areas: Oil, coal mining areas, etc.
2. Complex environments: Mountains, coastal
islands, etc.
3. Urban remote areas: Tourist attractions,
villages, etc.
4. Cost-sensitive cities: Africa, Latin America, etc.

◼ Wired access of cameras in the video surveillance field
In video surveillance projects, wired access of cameras is a mainstream scenario.
◼ Wi-Fi access of cameras in small places
Wireless cameras are typically applicable to small places, such as home surveillance, due to factors such as radio interference.

Packet Bandwidth
Name Service Characteristics Latency Jitter
Loss Rate (HD)
Storage traffic is sensitive to packet loss and
requires data integrity. Real-time surveillance
Video surveillance ≤ 400 ms ≤ 50 ms ≤ 0.1% On-demand
streams require a low latency. Playback traffic
requires good stability.
Video surveillance codec formats include H.264 and H.265, which require different streams:
• H.264 720P: streams of 2 Mbit/s; H.264 1080P: streams of 4 Mbit/s
• H.265 720P: streams of 1 Mbit/s; H.265 1080P: streams of 2 Mbit/s
In video surveillance, there is a burst video stream at a fixed interval, that is, a key frame: I frame.
Therefore, the Wi-Fi backhaul channel must reserve 130%–170% of bit-stream bandwidth for each camera. Around 7 Mbit/s bandwidth is
reserved for H.264 1080P video streams.
◼ WLAN wireless backhaul capability specifications
In the video surveillance field, the recommended WLAN wireless backhaul design is described as follows:
1. Preferentially select AP models with external antennas (AP8130DN, AP8150DN, or AP8130DN-W) to leverage advantages of dual-band
(dual-5G/dual-4.9G) networking.
2. The recommended P2P backhaul distance is within 5 km. If the distance exceeds 5 km, use the multi-hop networking. In this networking
mode, no more than three hops are recommended.
3. The recommended P2MP backhaul distance is within 3 km. If the root-leaf ratio is less than 1:6, 1:3 is recommended.

Wireless Backhaul Link Topology
The single-hop networking supports P2P and P2MP topologies.
P2P networking

✓ Application scenario: single remote site, with a backhaul distance of ≤ 5 km
✓ Backhaul capability: When the 18dBi-15deg antenna is used, the bandwidth at a
Root AP Leaf AP
distance of 3 km varies depending on the frequency bandwidth: 50 Mbit/s@HT20,
110 Mbit/s@HT40, and 150 Mbit/s@HT80.
◼ P2MP networking
✓ Application scenario: multiple remote sites, with a backhaul distance of ≤ 3 km
✓ Root-leaf ratio: 1:6 (Max.) and 1:3 (recommended)
✓ Backhaul capability: Use the 11dBi-60deg antenna (root) and 18dBi-15deg antenna
1 km, root-leaf ratio of 1:3, per-link
(leaf). Configure the root-leaf ratio of 1:3 at the distance of 1 km. In this case, the
P2MP bandwidth of 40 Mbit/s@HT40
networking bandwidth of the leaf link is 35 Mbit/s@HT40.

It is calculated based on the maximum transmit power of APs. For details, see
the network planning specifications.

Wireless Backhaul Link Bandwidth Calculation
To evaluate P2MP bridge throughput performance, consider the throughput coefficient on a basis of P2P bridge data.

Throughput Reduction Coefficient in P2MP Mode

Example for calculating the bandwidth of a P2MP link
Root-Leaf Throughput Impact Factor
Ratio When the 11dBi-60deg antenna (root) and 18dBi-15deg antennas (leaf) is
Root Leaf
used, the P2P throughput is 140 Mbit/s at HT40 at a distance of 1 km.
1:1 1 1
1:2 0.8 0.40 When the root-leaf ratio is 1:3, the throughput is calculated as follows:
1:3 0.75 0.25
Total bandwidth of the root node: 140 x 0.75 = 105 Mbit/s
1:4 0.7 0.18
1:5 0.65 0.13 Leaf node bandwidth: 140 x 0.25 = 35 Mbit/s
1:6 0.6 0.10
That is, when the root-leaf ratio is 1:3, the bandwidth of each branch radio
link is 35 Mbit/s.

Notes:
1. The preceding data does not take the EIRP restriction into consideration. It is calculated based on the maximum transmit power of APs. For details, see the WLAN Network Planning Key Messages.
2. In poor outdoor environments, it is recommended that the solution be designed based on 50% of the performance capacity when environment interference is not determined.
3. In the multi-hop bandwidth calculation, the bandwidth is calculated separately for each hop. The minimum bandwidth in all hops is multiplied by the attenuation ratio. The attenuation ratio is 10% for two hops and 20% for
three hops. Note 4: For details about throughput calculation in other cases, contact pre-sales network planning personnel.
