M10 Check-In Activity (Group Activity)

GROUP 4
MEMBERS:
CARINGAL, ZARINA ANGELINE
DOMINGO, DENZEL KATE
EVANGELISTA, JOHN CLYDE DALE
RUECO, AKIRA LOU
YWAYAN, MARIA ROZELLE

Perform/imitate the experiment on extracting DNA from strawberries. Submit a written

report with proper pictures with labels and with brief observations. Note: you may use
other fruits
Observation and Results:

The thread-like substance you see is DNA! It has been removed from the millions of cells that
make up a banana. Every living thing has DNA. The more similar and closely related the two
organisms are, the more similar their DNA is. All humans share 99% of their DNA with all other
humans. In addition, human DNA is very similar to that of other species. Most of the genes that
make up DNA are shared with other primates such as chimpanzees and other mammals such as
mice. Share genes with banana plants!

In this activity, each material plays a specific role by helping to extract DNA from the cells. For
example, detergents and soaps help destroy the outer membrane of cells, and sat helps separate
DNA from other substances in the cell. Also, because DNA does not dissolve in alcohol, this
substance helps organize the DNA into another layer.
Minutes of the meeting

Everyone in the group participated in the given task. Ms. Ywayan and Ms.
Caringal conducted and documented the experiments. Ms. Ywayan prepared the draft
while rest of the members shared their insight about the observation. Ms. Rueco
observed the Bromelain experiment. Ms. Domingo observed the Catalase experiment.
Mr. Evangelista observed the extracting DNA from banana.
