Test 5

1) (a) Diagram 1 shows the line AB passing through the points A(–4, 0) and
B(8, 9). The line through the point P(1, 10), perpendicular to AB, meets
AB at C and the x-axis at Q. Find (i) the coordinates of C and of Q, (ii)
the area of triangle ACQ.

(b) The table below shows experimental values of variables s and t.

t 5 15 30 70 100
s 1305 349 152 55 36
(i) By plotting a suitable straight line graph, show that s and t are
related by the equation 𝑠 = 𝑘𝑡𝑛, where k and n are constants.
(ii) Use your graph to find the value of k and of n.
(iii) The position of town P and town Q are (-8,10) and (1,4) respectively. A road is built such that the distance from
both towns is the same. Find the equation of the road.
(iv) A receiver tower is built on the factory R such that it can receive the signals in a coverage within 10km from point
R which has the coordinates of (4,2). Find the equation that represents the boundary where the signals can be
received by the tower.

(c) Relative to an origin O, the position vectors of points A and B are respectively. Given that ABC is a
⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ is equal to the length of 𝑂𝐴
straight line and that the length of 𝐴𝐶 ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ Find
⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ and 𝐴𝐵
(i) The length of 𝑂𝐴 ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
(ii) The position vector of the point C.

(d) Diagram 2 shows a framework of five rods, mounted at P to a wall, for a table lamp
at R.
(i) Calculate ∠𝑄𝑅𝑆, ∠𝑄𝑃𝑆 and the area, in cm2, of quadrilateral PQRS.
(ii) The length of rod QR is adjustable, while the length of the other rods is fixed.
The length of QR is adjusted until R is at R’, with ∠𝑅′𝑄𝑆 remaining at 35°. Draw
a sketch to show the position of R’ and, hence, state the size of ∠𝑄𝑅′𝑆.
(e) At a certain day, a breeder has 3000 ducks in his farm to supply to a wholesaler. He
starts selling 250 ducks on the next day and subsequently for the following days.
The breeder feeds the ducks before selling. If the cost to breed a duck is RM0.50
per day, calculate the total cost until his remaining ducks are 500.
(f) Find the sum of the first n odd natural numbers.
(g) In an arithmetic progression, the sum of the first four terms is 14 and the sixth term is –7. Find the first term and the
common difference of the progression.
(h) The pie chart below shows the division of expenditures in the year 2014 for David’s family. The following table shows
the price indices for the year 2014 based on the year 2010. Calculate
(i) The composite index for the year 2014 based on the year 2010, stating your answer correct to two decimal places,
(ii) The total expenditure of David’s family for the items in the year 2014, given that the total expenditure in the year
2010 was RM72 000,
(iii) The composite index for the year 2018 based on the year 2010 if each item increased by 25% from the year 2014
to the year 2018.
