Dear Sir or Madam,

I appreciate this opportunity to provide further background information in support of my application for
entrance to the International and Transnational Criminal Law (International Criminal Law) (Track 2)
program at the University of Amsterdam for the September 2021 term.

At first I would like to explain the reasons behind choosing this course. I am a mid-level police officer
working in Bangladesh Police, the prime law enforcement agency of Bangladesh. During my service I can
potentially serve my countrymen from the highest position of this organization. Therefore, millions of
people might be beneficiary of it. For my future career progression, there are certain requirements; higher
study is the most important requirement. Therefore, I opted to go for higher studies. In selecting a proper
study program, I have found that the International and Transnational Criminal Law is the perfect choice
for me.

I have graduated from the Department of International Relations, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka,
Bangladesh. After completing the studies, I went for prestigious civil service examination and was
recommended for Police Cadre by the Public Service Commission of Bangladesh. I therefore joined in
Bangladesh Police under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of Bangladesh. After joining, I got
admitted to Master of Police Science at the Department of Law, University of Rajshahi. After finishing
my mandatory one year training, I got myself posted to Chattogram Metropolitan Police as an Assistant
Commissioner and promoted to Additional Deputy Commissioner in due course. In this unit I was in-
charge of four police stations where nearly two million people lived. In October 2020, I got posted to 16
Armed Police Battalion, which is engaged in providing security to the Rohingya refugee camps situated in
Cox’s Bazar district. About one million Rohingya refugees live in the refugee camps. Here at the camps, I
need to maintain regular co-ordination with different national and international agencies along with
United Nations (UN) agencies like UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, etc. I believe that, my educational
background along with my job experience would benefit my potential study opportunity hugely as well as
the proposed study opportunity would enlighten and enable me to serve in this service head and shoulders
above the rest.

When it comes to studying law, in my opinion, there is no better place than the Netherlands. Both
International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court are situated in the Netherlands. Therefore
choosing the University of Amsterdam to study International and Transnational Criminal Law was a very
easy choice for me.

It is my dream to be in the highest position of Bangladesh Police and to serve my countrymen. This
degree program is an essential part to make my dream come true. In addition, I am eager to gain new
experiences through this study opportunity. I am positive that the University of Amsterdam would be an
excellent opportunity for an ambitious career plan of mine.

Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely yours

Md. Ashikur Rahman

Bangladesh Police.
