1931 CIE Chromaticity Diagram
The monochromatic colors are on the outside edge of the diagram. All combina-
tions of colors are on the inside, with white colors in the middle.
2
Color Temperature
Color temperature refers to stages of white light and is measured on the Planck
law of blackbody radiator scale.
This scale measures the color of a blackbody radiator (an ideal device with perfect
absorption and emission) at various Kelvin temperatures. Not all “white” light
(such as fluorescent light) lies directly on the Planckian black-body radiator curve.
CCT (Correlated Color Temperatures) refers to the Planckian black-body radiator
color temperature (CT) that is closest to the color of the white light source.

Color Rendering Index (CRI)
CRI is an objective standard used to judge how well a light source renders colors,
compared to a black-body radiator or daylight. The CRI is 100 when the object is
illuminated by daylight or incandescent light. The lower the CRI number (from
100), the more color distortion.

LED Product Selection
High Brightness – Usually less than 0.25 Watts, applications for these products include
signage, video screens, backlighting, indicators, and decorative lighting. Packaging
includes through-hole and surface mount types, often with a focusing element integral to
the device.
LED Modules - This product class addresses customers requiring higher levels of
assembly for integration into their lighting application. Solutions range from LED circuit
boards (Light Engines) to devices with integrated optics and power management.
Lamps and Bulbs – Products in this class address applications with an existing standard
lamp socket (MR16, E27, etc.) requiring an integrated LED technology solution.

Carclo Optics
Carclo Technical Plastics manufactures and markets standard and specialized optics that
are used in the efficient management of light emitted by LEDs. Carclo optics can be
mounted onto printed circuit boards using holders designed to suit the LED products
supplied by all the leading manufacturers. Molded using optical grade polycarbonate,
Carclo optics are characterized by high efficiency and better heat resistance than
competing acrylic products. The oldest manufacturer of plastics optics in the world, Carclo
today supports the global solid-state lighting industry through a unique network of plants,
warehousing facilities, and distributors located in Europe, the Americas, and in China.
Carclo is proud to have played a leading role in enabling the efficient use of LEDs around
the world and in an ever expanding universe of applications.
The type of optics that will best suit an application is mainly determined by the beam width
of the illumination pattern that you want to produce. The type of LED selected will also affect
the choice of optic. At the present time, there is no industry standard package for
high-brightness LEDs and different manufacturers have used different encapsulation
techniques. Because of this, some of Carclo’s range of optics have variants specifically
optimized for certain LED types.
Secondary optics are characterized by how wide a beam they produce. The beam width is
quoted as an angular width rather than a physical beam size at a given distance. This value
is called the Full Width Half Maximum divergence, the full width of the beam at 50% of the
maximum intensity.
When mounting secondary optics it should be remembered that positioning the optics at the
correct height relative to the LED is essential if you are to obtain the best efficiency and the
correct beam width. Equally important is the alignment of the optic axis to the LED chip. If
not correctly positioned the output beam will become uneven and offset.

Marvell Driver Electronics
The 88EM8183 significantly reduces external components required for a dimmable LED
driver. The primary side control topology eliminates the need to use opto-couplers and any
other associated secondary feedback circuit, thus improving system reliability. The
embedded digital core and analog circuit manages dimmer load requirements and also
eliminates the need to use external high-voltage bleeder circuits. In addition, 88EM8183
integrates a high voltage start up power supply circuit, hence eliminates the usage of
external start up circuits. The dramatic reduction in component count enables LED lighting
adoption in cost and space challenged applications such as retrofit lamps.
The Marvell 88EM8182 supplies the same performance for non-dimming applications.
Target Applications
• Retrofit A19, GU-10, PAR and BR lamps
• Downlight, recess, troffer and panel lighting
• External LED drivers

GainSpan Sensors and Control
Low Power GainSpan offers a suite of easy-to-use, low power Wi-Fi products for the
Wi-Fi Modules embedded system designer. This includes Wi-Fi modules, chips, and evalua-
tion kits.
The GainSpan family of fully certified modules offers a quick, easy and cost
effective way for device and appliances manufacturers to add Wi-Fi capabili-
ties to their products. Two versions of the module are available: GS1500M
and GS1011M. Both modules provide connection to any embedded design
utilizing an 8/16/32-bit microcontroller via simple commands. The modules
are an ideal solution for organizations with limited or no Wi-Fi or RF
expertise, as they not only dramatically reduce RF design time but also
remove the burden of testing and certification, allowing customers to focus
on their core application, product or expertise. The modules meet all regula-
tory and Wi-Fi Alliance requirements.
Multiple software configurations are available for the stack running on each
module. For applications utilizing a resource constrained 8/16 bit microcon-
troller host, the modules support a serial to Wi-Fi function and run the full
Wi-Fi and TCP/IP networking stacks, completely offloading the host. Other
configurations are supported for Wi-Fi based sensor devices as well as for
applications using a more powerful microcontroller host.
Customers can quickly and easily add GainSpan low power Wi-Fi connectiv-
ity and take advantage of advanced networking features and services not
readily available with other Wi-Fi modules including enterprise security,
embedded servers (HTTP, DHCP and DNS servers), service and device discov-
ery (mDNS and DNS/SD), XML parsing, and over the air firmware upgrades, as

requirement later in the design process, providing much greater design flexibility. Also, thanks to
the integration of Xenerqi’s design and manufacturing process, we can provide not only electrical
design, but also customization in the power supply case, cable assemblies or connectors which
allow for tighter integration.
