HIST2110 – 006

There have been an immense number of instances where I have stood in my closet and
told myself “I have nothing to wear!” as I am surrounded by heaps of clothes, I once considered
cute enough to spend money on. Many girls deal with this ironic phenomenon; but why? It is
simply because of the dynamic characteristics of the fashion trends surrounding us. With what is
currently in style always changing, it becomes easy to become uninterested in the clothes we
currently have. This situation makes me wonder how far we have actually come in terms of
change in the fashion industry. Thus, I thought it would be appropriate to research the history of
fashion. With this being such a broad topic, I thought a few refinements to this study would be
suitable. While there is a vast amount of history in men's fashion, I will be focusing on the
historical changes in women's fashion. Fashion is a global industry and has been changing
constantly all over the world. However, being a resident in America, I have a specific interest in
the change present in America. For this research project, I will be researching the historical
changes of women's fashion in the 20th century. Focusing on this is more specific to social-
historical changes. I am curious to gain a better understanding of how the events going on at
certain time periods impacted the expression of fashion amongst women. This can be studied by
formulating a specific research question. Studying a question such as "How has women's fashion
changed in America with respect to the historical events throughout the 20th century?" could be
suitable in order to gain a better understanding. The evolution of fashion possesses a significant
amount of history, which is why I decided on this field of study.
