Since 1993 there hadn’t been any major changes aside from a few dirt paths being paved over Most recent changes are the additions of the new enclosure for the indoor arena and three

History of site and Mt. Diablo Park
Leap of Faith Farms is located in unincorperated Walnut Creek on a 9.67 acres plot of land in the
Diablo Mt. valley area. The organization has been using the propperty for 7 years and bought it from the
previous owners and have made and are planning to make more changes to accomidate their needs for
a therapy facility.
The Mr. Diablo area was once inhabited by the Miwok people. The mountain area was a sacred
place for many other Ohlone tribes and was seen as the main origin of light and life for them. Inevitably
pressure from western cultures pushed many tribes out of the mountain areas and forced them into as-
similation. In the 1960’s, as part of an agressive effort, the government began buying up private land in
the area to increase the size of the park.

Therapeutic horseback formally originated in the 1960’s
Germany, but has roots dating back to Ancient Greece. The
therapy was originally intended to help patients with scolio-
sis but was modified to help patients who have trouble with
physical mental and social skills.
The pelvic three dimensional movement of horses is
very similar to the movement of humans. With this connec-
tion, patients are able to control the horses movements as if
they were of their own leading to them developing better skills
interacting with their environment.
The treatment has a wide range of disabilities it can be
used for. Some of the common are autism cerebral palsey
and spinal cord injuries that limit motor skills.

Leap of Faith farms is one of 20 of these facilities in

California and hopes in some years to become one of the
largest equine-assisted facilities in the united states.
They are in need of new facilities to accommodate their
future growth. They currently do not have an established
place on site dedicated to treating patients. They have had to
resort to using the small spaces in the main barn office areas
to take manage patients.
They hope the new facilities can be a place where pa-
tients doctors and their relatives can be in a controlled envi-
ronment to better monitor their growth.
Their current site has very few open spaces that can Autistic Patient interacting with horse. Patient and Therapy Team working closely with young child.
be used to build this new building but they are ideally looking
to see if they can convert a current low usage space into this
lounge and office area.

DUMPSTER

Since this site is a farm there is a particular smell in

the general area, but the area that are in purple STABLE
where stables and the dumpster was located, that
STABLE
had especially strong smells.

In this diagram, relatively loud areas ate in red and relatively loud
areas are in blue. Since this farm is located in a suburban area,
there isn’t a significant amount of noise which is bothersome.
Onece in a while you can hear the planes passing by overhead or
cars passing by the road on the south-west side of the farm. At the STREET ON THE
