Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

In relation to the new normal that pandemic has implied, biking as recreational

and alternative use of transportation now plays a big role in having a better transport

system. Biking, also known as cycling, is an activity that requires good health and

strong immune system therefore, it is still within the ability of an individual whether

or not he/she can go biking if in need of conveyance or for recreational activity only.

Recreational biking is defined as riding bike purely for entertainment purposes. It

maintains and recreates the Filipino tradition where they enjoy riding vehicles you

can't find anywhere else in the world such as tricycle, pedicab, and calesa; when used

as the opposite, it would be considered a mode of transportation. Bicycles are

affordable and accessible to people with limited means. Ever since the pandemic has

happened, our right to travel and be socially intact on our society was then prohibited.

This gives people the idea to reconsider biking as recreational and alternative use of

transportation.

The main objective of the study is to analyze biking as recreational and alternative

use of transportation on Grade 11 STEM Students during the pandemic at Jesus Is Lord

Colleges Foundation Inc., Trends on mobility and transportation was recently shifting

to solo traveling which is biking therefore, leads us to our research: analysis on biking. The

final goal of this research is to see the analysis on biking as recreationalactivity and

transportation.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to find out the use of biking as recreational and alternative use of

transportation during this pandemic of Grade 11-STEM students of JILCF. This study

will affect the following:

Students. The direct results of this research are based on the students experience

in biking as recreational and alternative use of transportation. Any findings that the

research has found improvements on will benefit the students in their future

experiences in biking.

Employees. The result of the study will help to improve the professional

employees with their experience in biking in the future as one of the variables in this

study is the study and research for biking as an alternative means of transportation

including: Road Safety for Bikers, Bike lanes, and Going to Work using a Bike. Any

improvements found in the study will then benefit the employees.

Civilians. This study can benefit civilians who are planning on buying a bike for the

purpose of recreational activities detailing the dangers, health benefits, and additional

safety information. Through this research civilians can learn and discover theeffects of

biking for their health and recreational experiences.

Theoretical Framework

The theoretical basis of this paper is the formulated theory of Deming and Hunter

(2012), which is called Knowledge Theory. According to Deming this said theory

proposes the Psychological Theory of Knowledge where people try to determine why

people do what they do. Interpreting ideas on transportations, knowledge, and riding

a bike.

This theory is connected to Biking as Recreational and Alternative use of

transportation due to the scientific explanation on how people end up deciding for

themselves whether to ride a bike or not. To either go on recreational biking or biking

as an alternative use of transportation. Based on Deming and Hunter Knowledge theory

is how others know what they know. It is an area that is difficult for most people to

understand and see the value of but to put related thoughts on autopilot where it

doesn’t consciously question others. The body incorporates experience and then learns

how to accomplish something. People will tend to think of this in a way like they have

5

learned something about how things work. Using this, the researchers can analyze and

understand that learning to ride a bike can either be for transportation or recreational

use but most likely will learn any other bike very easily. On the other hand, in

Knowledge and riding a bicycle theory where people consider biking as exercise, stress

reliever, and recreational activity made them consider going biking where they see or

take other things seriously.

Statement of the Problem

The research of Analysis on biking as recreation and alternative use of transportation

during pandemic of grade 11 STEM students of JILCF.

To find out more about the topic, answer the following questions:

1. Why do you ride a bicycle? Is it helpful?

2. How does biking aid in transportation?

3. How is biking being used as a recreational activity?

Hypothesis of the Study

The researchers selected Grade 11 students for the study: Perceptions of students to

biking as recreation and alternative use of transportation. Here are some assumptions

of outcomes that our study may achieve:

1. There is a positive effect on Biking as an alternative use of transportation

for Grade 11 STEM Students on JILCF during the Pandemic.

2. There is a positive relation between the Pandemic and Recreational Biking

for Grade 11 STEM Students on JILCF.

Definition of Terms

For better understanding of the study, the following terms are defined:

Recreation is an activity of leisure, leisure being discretionary time. The "need

to do something for recreation" is an essential element of human biology and

psychology; to bring back something into life. Recreational activities are often done for

enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are "fun".

Cycling is also called bicycling or biking, is the use of bicycles for transport,

recreation, exercise, or sport. People engaged in cycling are referred to as cyclists,

bicyclists, bikers. It also includes the riding of unicycles, tricycles, quadricycles,

recumbent, and similar human-powered vehicles (HPVs).

Alternative is one of several things from which only one can be chosen. Offering or

expressing a choice several alternative plans; different fromthe usual or conventional:

such as. Existing or functioning outside the established cultural, social, or economic

systeman alternative newspaper alternative lifestyle.

Pandemic is an outbreak when an illness happens in unexpectedly high numbers.

It may stay in one area or extend more widely. An outbreak can last days or years.

Sometimes, experts consider a single case of a contagious diseaseto be an outbreak.

This may be true if it’s an unknown disease, if it’s new to a community, or if it’s been

absent from a population for a long time.

Coronavirus is a large family of viruses causing a range of illnesses, from the

common cold to more serious infections such as those caused by respiratory

circulation. It is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected

person coughs, sneezes, or exhales. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air,

and quickly fall on floors or surfaces.

Mountain biking is a sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain,

usually using specially designed mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with

other bikes but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance

in rough terrain, such as air or coil-sprung shocks used as suspension, larger and wider

wheels and tires, stronger frame materials, and mechanically or hydraulically actuated

disc brakes.

Transportation the movement of goods and persons from place to place and

the various means by which such movement is accomplished; an action of

transporting someone or something or the process alone being shown.

Immune System People with a weak immune system have a higher risk of

experiencing frequent infections and severe symptoms. They may be more prone to

pneumonia and other conditions. Bacteria and viruses, including the virus that causes

the infection COVID-19, can have a devastating effect on a person with a

compromised immune system.

New Normal is a new way of living and going about our lives, work and

interactions with other people. It is a state to which an economy, society, etc. settles

following a crisis, when this differs from the situation that prevailed prior to the start

of the crisis. The term has been employed in relation to the COVID- 19 pandemic and

other events.

Scope and Delimitation

The focus of the study is on the analyzation of an outdoor activity that whether

or not did the pandemic cause drastic changes to the students’ biking as recreational

and alternative use of transportation, this includes their understanding towards the

problem and insights why they decided to go biking since pandemic.

The study is delimited only for Grade 11 students at Jesus Is Lord Colleges

Foundation, Inc. located in Bunlo, Bocaue Bulacan. The study will be about the different

perspectives; what would students prefer in terms of public and private transportation.

Researchers will be conducting surveys from 14 respondents out of all the Grade 11

STEM students to be able to develop the main topic of the study.

Review of Related Literature

Recreational Biking

Recreation refers to all those activities that people choose to do to refresh their

bodies, minds and make their leisure time more interesting and enjoyable such as

walking, swimming, meditation, reading, dancing, and biking. It also relieves us of the

feeling of fatigue, restores our energy and promotes a sense of joy. Mental wellness is

critical to overall physical health. Participating in recreational activities helps manage

stress hence, taking time to nurture you provides a sense of balance and self-esteem,

which can directly recreate anxiety and depression (Airo Bike Seat, 2017).

It is discovered to be one of the most satisfying ways to get exercise, fresh air and

improve your health compared to any other form of recreation. Getting there under

your own power is rewarding. Communities that participate in sport and recreation

develop strong social bonds, are safer places and the people who live in them are

generally healthier and happier than places where physical activity isn't a priority. Sport

and recreation build stronger, healthier, happier, and safer communities.

The influence of biking from house to school on San Jose students is to avoid hassle

at parking. Education programs to increase Walking and biking. Bicycle commuting

facilities provide bikes to make them as a mode of transportation for work trips.

William Dela Cruz (2018) states that 27% of our nation's total greenhouse gas

emissions are transportation accounts and it's only the second highest following electric

power industry in our nation. Riding bicycles improves endurance due to the continuous

effortinvolved with biking for miles, there will be a variety of inclines and declines while

biking, which gives interval training at higher and lower intensity levels an opportunity.

Securing and importing bikes have been the marketing strategy used in selling his bikes,

as the pandemic continues the need for a safe way of transportation rises, and that is

the reason why biking has become a popular way of transportation.

The crucial point is that these changes and the growing interest in cycling is not

actually about cycling, but it is about what cycling brings to people. A greater proportion

of the globe's population now reside in students’ biking within cities, and this level is

forecast to reach 70% (World Health Organization, 2010).

Alternative Biking Transportation

Alternative transportation is any form of transportation that is not a private

automobile. Alternative modes of transportation are less harmful to our planet, reduce

traffic, and ease parking shortages. Transportation accounts for 27% of our nation’s total

greenhouse gas emissions which is the second highest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the

nation, following the electric power industry’s 35% (EPA, 2010). Therefore, biking as an alternative

use of transportation.

Travelling via bicycle, you will not need to worry about securing a parking space

and you will be able to park closer to your destination than if you drove. Over 75% of

U.S. workers drive alone to work, take an average of 25 minutes to get there, and spend

much of their time stopped in traffic (McKenzie & Rapino, 2011).

Cycling to school and/or work every day can be viewed as one’s personal

contribution to combating these statistics by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and

consuming less non-renewable resources. Each gallon of gasoline in our cars emits 8,887

grams (almost 20 pounds of CO2) into the atmosphere, whereas riding a bicycle

produces none aside from our breath (note that you still breath while driving) (EPA,

2011). Regarding the transport perspective, the reduction of private vehicle

dependency is a good pathway to achieve sustainable mobility.

Discouragement of private vehicle usage is highly expected to increase percentage

shares of non-motorized modes (i.e., cycling and walking) and public transport modes

(i.e., Jeepneys, trains, buses) that contribute to the improvement of traffic flow, energy

saving, mobile emission abatement, and social equity. Regidor et al. (2017) looked at

the development of some comprehensive rail networks, and the result highlighted that

some commuters were attracted out of cars, thereby improving traffic.

Biking/Cycling

Bicycles are affordable and accessible to people with limited means andsince the

pandemic happened, people’s right to go on public transportation was then

prohibited therefore gives them the idea to consider biking as recreational and

alternative use of transportation.

Urban environments with high levels of biking typically represent a combination

of many factors that help promote these modes of travel. The most compelling

argument for cycling, is that only via an integrated range of environmental features will

substantively change results. (Pucher and Buehler 2008).

However, small interventions often affect people’s perception of pleasant walking

or cycling environments which have positive outcomes. It should be emphasized,

however, that it is an open question whether these positive perceptions about small

interventions increase levels of walking and cycling at a population level. This is

particularly the case for walking. People will walk further than the 400 meters because

of distance or one quarter mile that had been proposed anecdotally as a maximum

walking distance (Olszewski and Wibowo 2005).

Bicycle parking

Cycling is experiencing a revival in many cities (Coren & Kopf, 2020). This article

reviews the scientific literature on bicycle parking and identifies existing gaps in research

and knowledge (Dela Cruz, 2018).

Riding a bicycle requires less space than driving a car where cyclists can recreate

the said activity and biking does not produce air pollution. Therefore, improves and

recreates the well-being of an individual (Chief Medical Officers, 2011). During thepast

few decades, governments have increasingly encouraged cycling through various

initiatives including investments in bicycle infrastructure. At the same time, the number

of bicycling-related reviewed publications has soared (Pucher & Buehler, 2017).

Bicycling Transportation Infrastructure

Bicycling is an active mode of transportation that integrates physical activity into

daily life. The bicycle is an attractive alternative to the automobile as an urban mode of

transport. The literature to date on transportation on biking and its safety is limited by

the incomplete range of facilities studied and difficulties in controlling exposure to risk.

Biking is associated with a range of individuals such as improved physical and mental

health, decreased obesity, and reduced risk of cardiovascular and other diseases as well

as ancillary benefits such as reduced emissions of noise, air pollutants and greenhouse

gases.

Biking as an alternative use of transportation is significant, and at this point there

is no reason to assume that health risks cancel out enjoyment. However, good welfare

requires attention paid not only to long-term population well-being, but also to the

factors that influence risk of injuries. Bicyclists are vulnerablebecause they must also

share the same infrastructure with motorized vehicles, and yetbicycles offer their users

no physical protection (M Anne Harris, Kay Teschke, Peter A Cripton & Meghan Winters).

Methodology of the Study

Methods and Techniques Used

Qualitative research that aims to answer the questions of how biking aids in

transportation, why is biking being used as recreation, and how is this helpful to Grade

11 STEM students of Jesus Is Lord Colleges Foundation.

For this qualitative research, data will be gathered using a phenomenological

study meaning a philosophical movement originating in the 20th century. Striving the

direct investigation and description of research as it has been consciously experienced

without theories whose main purpose is to seek reality from individuals' testimonies

based on the researcher’s own judgement in which they believe to have the ability to

provide relevant answers.

By identifying how biking contributes students to consider biking as recreational

and alternative use of transportation. The researcher aims to gather more personal

experiences therefore, the topic will beinvestigated to manifest on how the students

go on public transportation and recreational activity in which biking is used as the

researcher aims to gather more personal experiences.

Respondents of the Study

The researchers will be choosing representatives from each section, a total of ten

respondents from Grade 11 STEM students of Jesus Is Lord Colleges Foundation, Inc.

that regularly bikes for recreational and transportive purposes. Therefore, they are

suited to provide relevant answers that can be used by the researchers for the

research.

The data will be gathered through purposive sampling under the category of non-

probability sampling hence, researchers will be choosing the respondents based on

their own judgement whether the respondents have the means and ability to provide

relevant answers for the study or not. Researcher’s goal is to discover how a small group

understands or views a certain topic as this research will be using a maximal variation

sampling (William Dela Cruz, 2018).

Instrument of the Study

The researchers created an Open-Ended Questionnaire namely: Biking as

Recreational and Alternative use of Transportation during the Pandemic of 11 STEM

Students at Jesus is Lord Colleges Foundation, Inc. which is based on questionnaires

that purely offers qualitative study on recreational biking (Gil Penalosa, 2012).

The analysis on biking and how it is used for recreational purposes by the Grade

11 STEM students therefore determines the idea of having an individual to use bicycle

for transportation and recreational purposes. The process of how grade 11 STEM

students end up on riding bicycles as an alternative use of transportation during the

pandemic. The study consists of 5 questions divided into half about using bikes instead

of other vehicles as public transportation and each question will be detailing what

answer is being asked.

On the other hand, Recreational Biking mainly revolves around recreational

activities that recreates individuals as well as their well-being. This questionnaire

consists of 5 open-ended questions detailing on what kinds of recreational activities

they partook in and the effects of it.

Both questionnaires will be handed out and answered by the respondents for

seven (7) days. The researchers will collect the data and analyze it after.

Data Gathering Procedure

The presented data will be conducted through the means of the following:

1. The researchers will prepare a set of open-ended questionnaires to gather

data from students of 11-STEM. The data will be used to elaborate more on

the average opinion and experience of the students.

2. The researchers will be passing the questionnaires through online messenger

for sections STEM-A up to STEM-J which will then be answered by willing

respondents to share their opinions and experiences.

3. The respondents will be asked to answer both questionnaires for Recreational

Biking and Biking as an Alternative Transportation, the answers will be

recorded on the online questionnaire form.

4. This will continue until all the said number of respondents have been askedand

all questions have been answered. After all the respondents are done

answering, the researchers will now start to analyze and gather all the data

that will be acquired.

Data Processing and Data Generation

Data relating to the topic of biking experience will first be asked around

Facebook and messenger with the use of questionnaire handouts prepared via Google

Forms to gainvoluntary responses. The data gathered will then be processed with the

use of coding analysis. Coding is used to categorize ideas and identify the relations

between the answers (Medelyan, 2019). The data gathered will be tabled and

analyzed using the coding analysis by finding the recurring themes in the respondents’

answers and crafting a suitable theory. According to Medelyan (2019), using words or

short phrases are recommended to easily remember, skim, and organize.

Chapter 4

Presentation, Analysis, and Interpretation of Data

In this chapter, the researchers conducted surveys with google forms to be

handed out using Facebook messenger, of which have received 14 responses. The

gathered data were divided into three parts to answer questions 1 to 3 of the

statement of the problem in chronological order.

Part one answers question 1 of the Statement of the Problem which is “Why do

you ride a bicycle? Is it helpful?”. This includes the reasoning of their use of bicycle and

how it helped them mentally and physically during the pandemic.

Part two answers question 2 of the Statement of the Problem which is “How

does biking aid in transportation?”. The respondents have explained how biking aided

them during this pandemic as a private form of transportation to avoid public

transportation and as a compromise to the health protocols established in their

respective communities.

Part 3 explains the respondents’ opinion on question 3 of the Statement of the

Problem which is “How is biking being used as a recreational activity?”.

Part I: Students’ opinion on the usefulness of bicycles

The table below shows the results of the survey conducted in regards to the

question of Why do you ride a bike? Is it helpful? And its uses. By researching and

studying the biking habits and locations of the students the researchers are able to

infer whether biking may help the students in their lives. Starting from their biking

prefences such as; biking as a recreational activity, or biking as an alternative use of

transportation. The question aims to find out why the students feel inclined to a type

of biking habit or feel indifferent to either forms of biking. The researches have also

asked the pupils whether their biking habits helps them in their academic

performance. To find out the relation between biking activities and academic

performance. Lastly going back to the main topic and title of the research paper, the

researchers have also surveyed whether biking helps the students during this

pandemic. In order to understand the value of biking and as a general idea opener for

the researchers, they have given a broad question and will then explicate the answers

the students have given and have used as reference in the second and third part of the

Chapter 4 of the research paper.

factors of: Friends, Family, and Self. The prominent answer in the question showed to be friends

being the reason of them riding their bikes. Peers are big influences on students the age of the

respondents- shown in the results that the data presented- hence the reason why the

respondents got influenced into biking; students enjoy biking when joined with their friends to

go with their plans for the day or just traveling for fun. Family is a primary social group in a

person’s life so it is expected that they may influence each other with habits such as biking. For

the people who have answered self influenced, the data shows that they already liked biking

before adapting to biking. The respondents have also stated that biking is a form of exercise that is why

they have chosen biking as their recreational and transportational use.

biking activity they feel a sense of enjoyment from the feeling of liberation in doing

schoolwork. Biking also gives them the exercise they need in order to gain a stronger and

healthier body. Some respondents have also said that biking can help in their academics since

they are able to relax when biking giving them the chance to have a more refreshed look at

Table 1.3 presents that biking has helped them during this pandemic as a way to

exercise their bodies improving their physical health and also giving their mental health a

refresher that helps them do their tasks academically. Some respondents have said that biking

is also a good way to reduce carbon emission from the smoke that vehicles let out, helping in

cleaning the environment maintain appropriate amount of cleanliness. Some respondents

have stated that biking has helped them because of the tax-free mode of transportation, that

is, biking; having to owe no fare and be able to travel leisurely while getting some exercise

helped them stay fit physically and mentally. Biking is also said to help reduce the interaction

with other people, reducing the risk of contracting the current Coronavirus. Few respondents

have stated that biking helps them get together with friends, making it a helpful mode of

transportation for them during the pandemic when public transportation are seldom used due

to health protocols and social distancing.

Part II: Biking as means of Transportation

The second part will show the survey results that answer the second question of the

statement of the problem and their opinion on biking as an alternative use of transportation

during the pandemic. Such questions were asked in the first part for the researchers to have

an idea of the subject, and have further researched by the researchers. The respondents were

asked why they prefer biking as a means of transportation, to further elaborate on the third

question on Part 1 of the Chapter 4 of the research paper. The researchers then used their

answers in the first part as a reference point when analyzing the questions. The second

question asks about the students’ method of coping with biking as a use of transportation in

the pandemic, aimed to find out whether the respondents’ transportation biking have been

disturbed by biking and find out their method of coping with the pandemic in biking to help

future readers and researchers in the case that a positive result may be shared.

By finding out the opinions and reasons the respondents chose biking as their

alternative use of transportation, the researchers can find out the benefits, downsides, and

effects of biking to a students of Grade 11 STEM at Jesus is Lord Colleges Foundation Inc. not

only for the students but also its effects on the environment during this pandemic as biking

doesn’t produce any carbon emission which are harmful to the environment.

Table 2.1 biking as alternative transportation is picked because of cheap

maintenance and upkeep of a bicycle. Biking as an alternative mode of transportation is less

harmful to our planet, reduces traffic with the help of the bike lanes, and ease parking

shortages. Some respondents specifically chose biking as their means of transportation due to

its health benefits such as physical body exercise helping them stay fit during quarantine.

Biking is also a great money-saving method of transportation as it does not require them to

pay fare which they stated “…can grow in a daily basis.”

Another respondent has added that biking is a cheaper expense than other types of

transportation as it does not require gasoline as compared to gasoline-fueled vehicles (e.g.

motorcycles, etc.) which may cost more than public transportation when calculated with its

upkeep and maintenance expenses. Some students may find biking a faster method of travel

than other modes of transportation, which is the reason why they picked biking as their use of

transportation- giving them less hassle during this pandemic. William Dela Cruz (2018) states

that 27% of our nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions are transportation accounts, hence

the reason why some respondents chose to opt for biking- to reduce greenhouse gas emission

and help the environment. While some respondents disagree with the notion that biking as an

alternative use of transportation might be due to the distance of the location, traffic, and etc.

which in turn gives other vehicles the advantage over biking. Respondents have also stated

that biking is easier and safer to use than most transportation methods as it offers privacy in

terms of distance as compared to public transportation vehicles which are not suggested by

Table 2.2 clarified the importance of using a bicycle as a means of transportation

during the pandemic as the respondents have claimed that it helps them keep social distancing

and maintain health protocols. Some students have stated that biking is rare for them to use

during the pandemic, as they cannot go outside due to the health protocols implemented by

the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF), as well as their respective barangay protocols. Meanwhile

some students are able to bike every day to get to their target places or the locations where

they need to go (e.g. markets, stores, etc.). Some students were introduced to biking as a

means of transportation during this pandemic for the reason that it gives the rider a safer

transportation during the pandemic, hence why biking became a trend for their barangay.

Biking is also an importance mode of transportation for students as it is an easy access to far

away locations requiring vehicles which not all students may have.

Part III: Recreational Biking activities and how students participate in it

The last part of the survey analysis will answer the final question in the statement of

the problem. It will also explain why they choose to do recreational biking over other

entertainment and what they do as recreational activities. To better help the researchers and

future researchers in identifying the reasons as to why the students choose biking as their

recreational activities– which can then be used as reference points for future researches in

the given topic. The following are the survey questions and the interviewees answers:

Table 3.1 shows that student bikers usually go to parks, malls, subdivisions, and their

local tourist spots to enjoy sightseeing and even exercise while biking. The results perfectly

correspond with Airo Bike Seat (2017) stating that recreational biking gives the feeling of

satisfying exercise, fresh air, and an improvement in one's health compared to other

recreational activities. Results have shown that some students go biking in quiet and empty

areas where they can exercise and enjoy their time biking. Meanwhile some students enjoy

going to community-based recreational locations such as Meycauayan Commercial Center

(MCC) or Philippine Arena, which actually promotes safer community and produces a stronger

bond with each other (Airo Bike Seat, 2017).

Table 3.2 shows that students recreational biking activity motivations mostly

stemmed from community trends and to kick back and relax while also serving as an exercise.

Some communities have biking as a trend and in which have influenced some of the

respondents into starting biking as a recreational activity. However, some communities do not

have biking as a trend yet the respondents still chose to start biking as a recreational activity

in which helps them exercise and improve their health as well as getting fresh air. As stated in

a related article by Airo Bike Seat (2017), biking as a recreational activity gives great satisfaction

in exercise, getting fresh air, and improvement in one's health; that relates to most of the

respondents' answer which revolves around getting relaxation from biking and being physically

and mentally healthy.

recreated/revived when riding a bicycle. Most of the students feel refreshed when they just

bike and enjoy the scenery or when they travel to new places with or without friends, clearing

their mind and giving them time to relax and de-stress. Using a bike also helps the environment

as it does not emit any greenhouse gas since 27% of America's greenhouse gas emmission was

caused by automobiles and gas-fueled vehicles (William Dela Cruz, 2018), which makes

recreational biking the optimal activity to go for since it also helps people transport to a

location near or far. With studies showing that people will walk 400 metres or more to reach

a destination (Olszewski and Wibowo 2005) in order to get somewhere they need to. Some

respondents feel happy and enjoys just biking which helps them mentally refresh themselves.

Other respondents pointed out the sceneries and the fresh air they can see and get while

biking which makes them feel recreated/revived. Some students feel recreated/revived with

recreational biking when they bike to exercise.

Part IV

This part of the survey analysis will answer the miscellaneous queries about biking as

recreational and alternative use of transportation such as their agendas and their preference

for the type of biking. Part 4 is ultimately a recommendation and suggestion for future readers

who are biking and would like to know the thoughts, plans, activities, routes, etc. of other

bikers.

Part 4 can also be read by non-bikers and become interested and invested into biking

as Table 4.2 shows data on what the respondents categorize biking as- non-bikers may find

their explanations to be helpful in deciding whether or not to get a bike- either as an

alternative use of transportation or as recreational use, or both.

Table 4.2 shows that the students’ preference for biking are split for alternative

transportation use, recreational use, and for both. The students find biking as a cheap method

of transportation as it doesn’t require fare nor taxes but only for maintenance and emergency

repair uses. On the other hand, it helps the students to take their mind off their problems and

de-stress them that will allow for relaxation and ease of mind. In conclusion, the researchers

have analyzed that the students think of biking generally as a good way to get in exercise, as

well as relax by watching the sceneries around them while they bike giving them a sense of

relaxation.

Chapter 5

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendation

This chapter provides the result of the research and discusses the summary of findings,

answering the questions in the statement of the study. This chapter also discusses the

conclusion of the study as well as the recommendation of the researchers.

To answer the questions in the statement of the problem, the researchers sent out

survey questionnaires to fourteen chosen grade 11 STEM students from sections A to J about

their analysis in biking as recreational and alternative use of transportation. The data gathered

from the answers of the respondents were processed, analyzed, and interpreted by the

researchers.

Summary of Findings

Based on the data processed and analyzed, the results are summarized into the following:

1. The students' opinion on the usefulness of bicycles.

The researchers have analyzed those students from Grade 11 STEM in JILCF find

biking as useful both in recreational and transportation use. They find it helpful as it is a

means of entertainment and at the same time helps not only the body but also the mind

become fit and healthy, provided with both exercise and stress relief. The data has also

shown that students found it helpful in their academics as a recreational use. It refreshes

their minds which allows them to continue their school activities in their leisure and it

also helps them exercise as stated before. The students were mostly influenced by their

primary and secondary groups which are namely: their families, friends, and peers.

2. The students' opinions on Biking as a means of Transportation.

The students prefer biking as their modality for transportation during this pandemic

mostly since it can exercise the body. The respondents have also stated the cheap and

affordable costs of owning a bike which does not require a fare to use. The students find

biking as a means of transportation as safer than public transportations during this

pandemic as it corresponds with the health protocols that are being monitored as well

as keeping social distancing, and the convenience of being able to go anywhere freely

without the fare.

3. The Students' Recreational Biking activities and how they participate in it.

The students find spots such as parks, malls, tourist spots, and beachside as their

go-to places to enjoy and relax while looking at the sceneries. Tranquil places help the

students find peace and relaxation amidst the stress. Most of the respondents have

stated that biking is a trend in their communities and as such helped promote biking

during this pandemic giving a new way for people to relax. The students chose biking as

their means of recreational activity as it helps them exercise as well as refreshing

themselves mentally. As a recreational activity, biking helped the students to feel

recreated/revived when biking alone or with friends, going to places that they never

went to before and taking in sceneries they haven't seen.

4. Miscellanies on students' biking habits.

The students usually do not abide by agendas and will go wherever they please.

When and if the students have an agenda, they usually wake up early to have breakfast and

go to their respective meet up places. Some students also take agendas such as biking every

other day and only biking on weekends. The respondents all equally favor biking as

recreational activity and as a means of transportation as both helps them exercise and do

their jobs as stated while helping them unwind and destress.

Conclusion

In accordance with the result of the research, the following conclusions are hereby

made:

1. Students find biking helpful on both transportation and recreational aspects

which is proving to have a positive correlation.

2. Biking comes with minimal maintenance and costs, as such, the students deem

that biking is more affordable than everyday fare. The students also mentioned

how it abides by the health protocols and social distancing in the current times.

3. Recreational biking is mostly done just about anywhere the students want, but

most commonly are parks, malls, tourist spots, and tranquil places where they

can relax for the day.

Recommendations

With consideration of the conclusion made in the study, the following recommendation

are given:

1. Future researchers are encouraged to gather more research data from

students with an appropriate sample size.

2. The researchers recommend future researchers to use quantitative

approach in a survey form to conduct future studies as it will encompass the

general idea of the students given that the data shown in the research has

shown similarities in the students' opinions on biking.

3. Teachers at the school may use this study in understanding and analyzing

students that have been able to go on transportation and continue their way

of living since pandemic concerning biking as their recreational activity.

4. Future researchers are advised to conduct further studies on the other

modalities of transportation to know the reason why some students may

prefer other vehicles than biking.
