1. Five candidates: Claire, Jimmy, Jessie, Kent, and Gina are running for president pf the student government. After
the polls close, votes are called and the result in the table below are obtained:

a. How many votes were casted?

Add the number of votes of each candidate. The sum of the votes is the number of votes casted.

318 + 402 + 760 + 1,035 + 485 = 3,000

Therefore, 3,000 votes were casted.

b. Using the plurality method of voting, which candidate wins?

Using the table above, rank the five candidates from rank 1 to rank 5.

Using plurality vote, it is clear that Kent got the rank 1. Therefore, Kent won as the President of the
Student Government.

c. Did the winner receive majority of the votes?

The votes casted are 3000 votes. Let us determine the half of 3000.

3,000 / 2 = 1,500

The votes that Kent(winner) got is only 1,035 which did not reach the majority vote which is more than
half of 3,000 and that is 1,500. Therefore, Kent did not receive the majority of votes.
2. Six candidates, Sophia, Mark, John, Jenny, Mike, and Sky were nominated for Chairman position in an
organization. After the polls’ close, ranked ballots were tallied, and the results are summarized below.

a. What percent of the votes did the winner received?

In this problem, I used plurality method.
Determine the times that the candidate got the first place then add them on.
Sophia = 28
John = 30
Mike = 25
Sky = 12 + 25 = 37
28 + 30 + 25 + 37 = 120 votes
Divide the highest vote to the total of votes then multiply to 100
37/120*100 = 30.83%
Therefore, Sky with 37(30.83%) votes is the winner.

b. Determine the winner using plurality with elimination, Borda count, and pairwise comparative methods of
voting.

add the times that the candidate got 1st place until 6th place. Each candidate will receive 6pts for their 1st
place, 5pts for every 2nd place, 4pts for 3rd place, 3pts for 4th place, 2pts for 5th place, and 1pt for 6th
place.

The candidate with the most total points is declared the winner.
