Examples
1. Resonance occurred at a frequency of cycles per second in a vertical vibration test of a
block 1 X 1 X 1 m. determine the coefficient of elastic uniform in compression of the
soil given that the weight of the oscillator in 65 kg and that the force produces by it at 12
cycles per second is 100 kg. Also compute the amplitude in vertical direction at 12
cycles per second.
2. A trapezoidal footing is to be produced to support two square 30 cm and 50 cm sides
respectively. Columns are 6 meter apart and the SBC of soil is 400 kN/m2. The bigger
column carries 5000 kN and the smaller 3000 kN. Design a suitable size of the footing
so that it does not extend beyond the faces of the columns.
3. A Soft, normally consolidated clay layer is 6 m thick with a natural water content of
30%. The clay has a saturated unit weight of 17.4 kN/m3, a specific gravity of 2.67 and a
liquid limit of 40%. The ground water level is at the surface of the clay. Determine the
settlement of the foundation is the foundation load will subject the center of the clay
layer to a vertical stress increase of 8 kN/m2.
4. A group of 16 piles of 600 mm diameter is arranged in a square pattern with center to
center spacing of 1.2 m. The piles are 10 m long and are embedded in soft clay with
cohesion of 30 kN/m2. Bearing resistance may be neglected for the piles. Adhesion
factor is 0.6. Determine the ultimate load capacity of the pile group.
