Epilogue
The Caitanya Symposium
« Dandatmika Seva »
Fair princess Radha at dawn from slumber rises, cleans her teeth and face and hands.
The sakhis rub her with fragrant oils and assist with her bathing. Then they adorn her
with fine garments and precious ornaments. In these and such acts beautiful Radha
spends one danda; and her mind filled with anxious care in hopes of seeing Krsna. 1st
Within the period up to the eighth danda Radha honours prasad, whereafter all the
sakhis enjoy the remnants. 8th
By the end of the eighth danda Krsna begins his 'taking the herds to pasture'. 9th
Radha spends the tenth danda returning to her own residence/ 10th
During the eleventh danda Radha takes the permission from her mother-in-law, and
with all haste and expedience she gathers the items for the rituals of Sun worship. 11th
Three dandas elapse whilst proceeding to Surya Kunda; the items gathered for ritual
worship are kept secure in the Sun temple. 14th
Then she bows down to Krsna and presents him with a flower garland and sandle paste
balm; overwhelmed in a transport of love, there is a swelling of rapturous joy.
Thereupon the lovers divert themselves in playful curiosities, and when they mount the
swing their minds are suspended in ecstasy.
Then, taking along the sakhis, they sportively enter a bower to commence the dice board
game.
When Krsna is defeated in the game by fortunate Rai, he tells her; "Thou hast bought
and won me as the willing slave at thy feet."
Anon, Krsna enjoys a repast of fruits and sweets, after which Rai and the sakhis receive
and relish the remnants.
The couple then enter a beautiful jewel-temple where they play much rasa vilAsa and
their hearts bloom wide with joy.
Thus six dandas are spent in rapturous love-sports; by the twenty second danda Rai
(Kishori) returns to her kunda. 22nd
Thereafter, accompanied by her sakhis, Rai returns home and four dandas elapse on the
way. 29th
Arriving home, and having bathed, Rai and the sakhis partake of the sanctified offerings
from the Surya worship.
Receiving the prasad Radha spends another danda, and then, seeing Krsna (on his return
from the pasture), she hastens to prepare various dainty cates, pleasing to Krsna, such as
savouries and sweetmeats.
All these she puts in the hands of Tulasi who is deputed (to convey the same to Krsna,
who has by this time also arrives at his home.) 30th
During the thirty first danda Rai sits in a sequestered spot and happily weaves flower
garlands for Krsna. She also grinds sandalwood and fashions tasty betel leaf-wraps, and
thus the eventide draws nigh.
These then are the thirty two dandas that comprise the daytime sports.
When evening comes Radha lays down to rest a while.
Ratri Lila
Two dandas pass while Sri Radha reclines on her bed. 2nd
By the end of the sixth danda Krsna's prasadi arrives, and Radha accompanied by the
sakhis takes her repast. 7th
In the seventh danda (Sumukhi) Rai rests again for a while, and by the tenth danda she
rises and prepares for abhisara (going out to meet the beloved). 10th
Two more dandas elapse proceeding to the assigned trysting bower (sanket kunja). 11th
During the twelfth danda she arrives at the kunja-bower (and meeting with Krsna), in
the thirteenth danda, serves him betel leaf wraps and daubs him with sandal paste.
Thereafter, along with the sakhis, Radha and Krsna perform abundant varieties of
dancing, such as Rasa and Lasya and others. In the passing wondrous spectacle of the
Rasa, four dandas elapse. Then the sakhis join together and sing the glory of Radha and
Krsna's love. Radha and Krsna's minds are thrilled with joy by the raptures of their most
mutual love rasa, and when they go to rest in a bower cottage, they are attended upon by
the sakhis. 17th
By the eighteenth danda they begin anew the kunja-vihAra, and then adorn each other
with various floral garments and various floral ornaments. 18th
In the twentieth danda they again enjoy a light repast, at which Vrndadevi and others
are thrilled with joy. 20th
After the twentieth danda Radha and Krsna engage in amorous sports and spend four
dandas in love-play, with great exhilaration. 24th
By the twenty fourth danda the two lovers fall asleep within the bower and spend two
more dandas in blissful repose. 26th
By the twenty sixth danda comes the time to break the blissful union, and apprehensions
of immanent separation are expressed in honey sweet lament.
Thus, as each reluctantly departs from the bower and repairs to their respective abodes,
two more dandas elapse. 28th
and in the last muhurta of the night happily goes to sleep. 32nd
Radha and Krsna's lila khela is beyond description, but I have spoken in brief with
reference to the application of service. Adhering to the path of passion, where to
contemplate the services of the accomplished state, is also the very means of its
attainment; practice mental service with a siddha body conceived within the mind; with
the gross elemental body always practise the disciplines of hearing and glorification;
maintain outwardly the conventional duties and uphold virtue. Very soon the divine
body will become apparent, and shuffling off the mortal coil, eternal service is in truth
attained. Krsna das, whose hopes rest at the feet of Sri Rupa and Raghunatha, tells the
sixty four danda secret-service.
