History of college of nursing

Western Mindanao State University's Faculty of Nursing was established in 1974 and has
since earned a reputation as one of the region's best nursing schools. It began by
offering a regular nursing curriculum, but soon expanded to include a graduate nursing
degree and a second nursing course. The College of Nursing has developed into a
prestigious institution.
Nurses are trained to serve hospitals in their communities and around the world. Due to
its proficiency in nursing license tests, WMSU Nursing University has gained the faith and
confidence of the community in generating brilliant specialized nurses. Since its beginnings,
graduates have studied a variety of fields and specialties, as well as serving in a
variety of nations.

College of nursing

 Under the presidency of Mrs. Ignacia B. Olaso, the Zamboanga State College (ZCS)
ventured into offering a 5-year degree program leading to a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing, which was approved per Board of reagent resolution No. 78. On the
58th Board Meeting of the Board of Trustees of the ZCS, on October 17, 1973.
 The Department of Nursing, on the other hand, began offering a two-year pre-
nursing program in 1970. With the word that the Bachelor of Science in Nursing
degree would be approved soon, the first-year pre-nursing class of 1972 moved on
to the second-year pre-nursing class of 1973.
 The affiliation with Zamboanga General Hospital (now Zamboanga City Medical
Center) was approved on June 25, 1974. The SouthCom Hospital (now Camp
Navarro General Hospital) was chosen as the institute's base training hospital.

The Department of Nursing was converted to an Institute of Nursing in 1974 per Board
Regent Resolution No. 69, Mrs. Rosella A. Uro was designated Head of the Institute on
the same year. Part time instructors were hired. They were:
a. Jose Maria Lucas, M.D.—Anatomy and Physiology
b. Francisco Barrios, M.D. Microbiology
c. Mrs. Teodora Calderon- Nursing Jurisprudence
 The institute was examined by the Professional Regulation Commission's Board of
Nursing on September 3-4, 1974. The evaluation's findings revealed a very positive
situation. They advised that the BSN Special/ Supplemental program be opened
based on their findings.
 Second semester, Nov. 1974, another set of Clinical Instructors were hired to
teach major classroom subjects and clinical related learning experiences.
a. Mrs. Ester Parel—Medical and Communication Diseases Nursing
b. Mrs. Myrna Cabato—Surgical Nursing

 Early 1975, the next set of instructors came in, they were:
A. Mrs. Crispina Reyes—mental Health psychiatric Nursing
B. Mrs. Enriqueta Perez—Maternal and Child Nursing and Community Health
Nursing

 The Golden Pioneer students sweated it out and moved on to obtain their nursing
caps during the First Cap and Candlelight Ceremony held on Oct. 19, 1974, at the
ZCS Social Hall, thanks to the dynamic leadership of the institute's president and
the fervent passion and commitment of the staff.

In June 1975, the BSN Supplemental Program was opened. Thirty registered nurses, who are GN
graduated, enrolled under this program. Another pair of Clinical Instructors was hired in 1976:

B. Mrs. Emerita Agustin

 On March 23, 1977, the Golden Pioneer Class overcame all of their challenges and
obtained their nurse's pin, PIN-RING, and Recognition Ceremony at the ZCS's Open Stage.

 As a result of the Pres. Pres. John F. Kennedy issued Decree 1427. On June 10, 1978,
Marcos changed ZCS into Western Mindanao State University, and the Institute of Nursing
became the College of Nursing.
