1. SYSTEM DIAGRAMS AND BLOCKS DIAGRAM

2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The condensate water system is to collect condensate of turbine exhaust, drainage of pipeline and drainage of
LP heater for recycling use to increase the efficiency of heat circulation. The condensate water system
conveys the condensate water from condenser hot well to the polish system, LP heaters, and deaerator. The
condensate water system will also supply low-pressure attemperating water to the required equipment, such
as the flash tank, condenser desuperheaters, LP bypass desuperheater, the third stage desuperheater, the steam
blowdown tank, the HP cylinder ventilation valve desuperheater, the gland steam desuperheater, the turbine
exhaust hood spraying system, the atmospheric blowdown tank, mill firefighting extinguishing desuperheater.
to control steam temperatures at the desired levels. Make up water pump supplies makeup water to condenser
hot well and Close-circuit Cooling Water (CCCW) system.
Two suction barrel (can) type constant speed condensate pumps each with 100% capacity, three LP heaters
(No.4, No.5, and No.6), one gland steam condenser and a deaerator are in the system. For protecting the
condensate water level during operation, there are piping systems with main and auxiliary control valve
controlling the make-up water entering the condenser hot well. There are two condensate emergency make
up water pump and one condensate normal make up pumps and one 1100m3 condensate storage tank in the
make-up water system.
During normal operation, the live steam (main steam) from boiler superheater outlet header to turbine shall
flow in cascade through the following equipment:
• Condensate water pump.
• Gland steam condenser.
• LP heater No.6.
• LP heater No.5.
• LP heater No.4.
• Deaerator.
There are two condensate emergency make up water pump and one condensate normal make up pumps and
one 1100m3 condensate storage tank in the make-up water system. The condensate storage tank will be
fulfilled by the water coming from the demineralized water treatment system.
During normal operation, the makeup water from condensate storage tank will be conveyed to condenser hot
well by using the condensate emergency make up water pump when during unit start or using the condensate
normal make up pumps when during unit normal operation.

3. VERBAL DESCRIPTION OF P&IDS

3.1. Condenser
The condenser is a single shell, dual process, and surface heating type heat exchanger. The condenser sits
along the turbine exhaust horizontal axis, the condenser connects with turbine exhaust cylinder by means of a
rigid joint. The exhaust steam condenses in the condenser as the sea cooling water flows through the tube
bundles. The condensate is collected in the condenser hot-well and conveyed by condensate pumps to the
deaerator

3.2. Condensate water pump

The condensate-water system for one turbine includes 2×100% motor driven condensate water pumps. One
condensate water pump will be used for normal operation, the other one is in standby. The condensate water
pumps are located at the condensate water pump pit of the turbine hall

3.3. Gland Steam Condenser


One full capacity horizontal, surface condensing, gland steam condenser will be used to cool the leakage
steam from gland seal and main steam stop valves (MSV). The gland seal exhaust fans will keep the gland
steam condenser (GSC) a slight vacuum condition for preventing steam leaking to atmosphere and turbine oil
system. The sufficient condensate shall flow through the gland steam condenser to condense the leakage
steam and keep the condenser vacuum. Gland steam condenser is arranged on the mezzanine floor near to B
row on turbine tail side in turbine house.

3.4. LP Heaters
Three full capacity horizontal, surface condensing, dual flow type LP heaters will be set using the
corresponding extraction point steam. Condensate-water gains heat from turbine extraction steam while
passing through the tube bundles. The bypass system with motor driven gate valve is designed for LP heater
No.4, No.5 and No.6 individually. No.5 & No.6 LP heater are arranged on the mezzanine floor EL.6.9 m
(tentative) of deaerator bay.

3.5. Deaerator
One full capacity horizontal, inner mixed deaerator will be set using the NO.3 extraction point steam to heat
the condensate water and removing all dissolved oxygen in condensate water.
Deaerator will be in operating in slide pressure with steam supply from No. 3 extraction steam of turbine in
normal operation, and from auxiliary steam system in start-up or low load operation. Deaerator is arranged
on EL.26.0m (tentative) of deaerator bay.

3.6. Make up water pumps


Three horizontal, end suction make up water pumps (demineralized water pump) and one condenser service
pump will be set to convey the demineralized water to the condenser hot well. Two make up water pumps
will be used for emergency and start conditions and one make up water pump will be used for normal
operation condition.

3.7. Condensate water Piping

3.7.1. From condenser hot well outlet to Condensate water pump inlet Piping
It is from condenser outlet to condensate water pump inlets, and includes piping, valves and its accessories
fittings, drains and vents.
There is a manual butterfly valve and a relief valve and a horizontal strainer in the condensate water pump
inlet piping. The function of the strainer is to protect the condensate water pump from entering contaminant
which may possibly be accumulated in the condenser hot well or the inlet water pipe. When the strainer clogs
by contaminants and a high differential pressure has induced, the blow down valve shall be opened for back-
flushing. The relief valve is to protect the condensate water pump and its inlet pipe from possible
overpressure. This is because the outlets of the two condensate water pumps connect to a common manifold.
The high pressure water of the operating pump enters the outlet pipe of the stand-by condensate water pump
if its outlet check valve is passing. The high pressure water can flow into the inlet pipe of the stand-by
condensate water pump caused it turning reversely. If the inlet isolating valve of the stand-by condensate
water pump is closed, an overpressure may happen in the stand-by condensate water pump and its inlet
piping.

3.7.2. From Condensate water pump outlet to condensate water control station Piping
It is from condensate water pump outlets to condensate water control station inlet, and includes piping,
valves and its accessories fittings, drain and vent system.
A flow device upstream of the deaerator is mainly for measuring the condensate water flow.
There will be four branches on the condensate water piping before the control station.
Upstream of the No.6 LP heater is a deaerator level control station. The station consists of a motor operated
main control valve with two manual isolation valves, and a motor driven bypass valve.

3.7.3. From Control Station to deaerator Inlet Piping


It is from control station to the deaerator inlet, and includes piping, valves and its accessories fittings, drain
and vent system.
The condensate piping first enters No.6 LP heater, flows through LP heaters No.5 and No4 then to the
deaerator. Each LP heater is with motor operated isolation valves at the inlet and outlet and a motor bypass
valve. A flow device on the outlet piping of the NO.4 LP heater is mainly for measuring the condensate water
flow. A check valve on the outlet piping of the NO.4 LP heater is mainly for preventing the flow reverse.

3.7.4. Condensate water pump Recirculation System


It is from the condensate pipe to the condenser inlet, and includes piping, valves and its accessories fittings,
drain and vent system. It mainly consists of a flow device and a flow control station.
A flow device upstream the flow control station is mainly for measuring the condensate water flow. The flow
control station is mainly consisting of a pneumatic operated main control valve with two isolation valves, and
a normally closed motor driven bypass valve.
The recirculation piping ensures there is minimum flow passing through the pump to cool the pump body,
and prevent the fluid inside the pump heating to vaporization, causing cavitation and possible damage to the
pump.

3.7.5. HP Bypass Attemperating Water System


The low-pressure attemperating water
HP bypass attemperating water is supplied by condensate water, It is from the condensate pipe to the HP
bypass valve, it is mainly consisting of two pneumatic operated main control valves.

3.7.6. LP Automatic thermal condition judgement


The low-pressure attemperating water will be spray to the required equipment, such as the flash tank,
condenser desuperheaters, the second stage desuperheater, the steam blowdown tank, the gland steam
desuperheater, the turbine exhaust hood spraying system, the atmospheric blowdown tank, mill fire fighting
extinguishing desuperheater. Which to control steam temperatures at the desired levels.
It is from the condensate water pipe piping and are divided into as the follow:
• Branch to the turbine drain flash tank A.
• Branch to the turbine drain flash tank B.
• Branch to the fuel oil steam desuperheater.
• Branch to the pressure equalizer tank.
• Branch to mill fire fighting extinguishing desuperheater.
• Branch to the desuperheat water for main steam to auxiliary steam header.
• Branch to the desuperheat water for HP bypass.
• Branch to the second stage desuperheater.

• Branch to LP cylinder spray water system.


• Branch to CCCW system.
• Branch to condenser vacuum system.

3.7.7. Drain and vent


Drains and vents provided in the condensate water system are in accordance with the geometric configuration
of piping. Vents are for expelling air at priming and for sucking in air at draining. Vents and drains are at the
highest and the lowest points of pipe sections respectively.

4. DESIGN DATA

4.1. Design parameters


The design pressure of condensate pump suction piping is 0.35 MPa.g, and the design temperature is 50℃.
The design pressure of the pipe from condensate pump outlet piping to No.6 LP heater inlet is 2.92 MPa.g,
and the design temperature is 50℃
The design pressure of the pipe from No.6 LP heater outlet piping to deaerator inlet is 2.92 MPa.g, and the
design temperature is 159.1 ℃

4.2. Operating 50philosophy Maybe what is meant by operating philosophy


Condensate system are monitored and controlled in the unit DCS. According to the requirement of process
start-up, running, stopping, interlock and protection, necessary instruments are set to meet remote monitoring
and control from DCS. Local instruments are for inspectors to check the state of equipment.

4.2.1. Normal Operation


When the condensate pumps as well as the related auxiliary equipment are ready, the condensate system will
start up. When the load is below about 30%, the minimum flow pneumatic control valve will be sed. If the
load is higher than about 30%, the main flow pneumatic control valve is in service.

4.2.2. Load Changes


Each unit has 2×100% motor-driven condensate water pumps. During normal operation, only one condensate
water pump will be used, the other one is in standby. In case of the operating pump failures, the standby
pump starts to maintain system flow.
All LP heaters are normally in service. The operator monitors all the operation parameters such as
temperature, pressure, flow, water level, water quality and others in CCR operation station. The operator
compares the supervised or recorded operation parameters with the former operation data, especially the ones
under the same working condition. If obvious deviation happens, he should check and analyze the cause that
leads to change and take appropriate action.

4.2.3. Exceptional Operation


a) Condensate pump accident
One condensate pumps are operating in parallel in normal operation. If any one of the operating condensate
pump is in trouble, the stand-by condensate pump will start automatically. The unit load will change
accordingly.
·A condensate pump trips:
The stand-by condensate pump will start automatically or otherwise by manual.
b) Loss load
After turbine losses load and main steam stop valves tripped, the water level in deaerator and hot-well keep
stability at normal water level through the control valve of deaerator water level, the control valve of
condenser hot-well water level, and the control valve of condensate pump minimum flow recirculation.
c) LP heater shut-down
When there is a tube leak or drain valve failure in a LP heater, water level in the heater can reach accident
high level, cut off the heaters manually and the condensate will flow through the bypass piping. The load of
turbine shall be limited according to the number of LP heaters tripped.

4.2.4. System Shut down


After shut down of the plant, the condensate pumps are taken out of operation when there are no further
demands of flow through the boiler, condensate supply and condenser vacuum. The condensate make up
water pumps also can shut down by condenser water level.
When the unit load is decreasing gradually, finally turbine trips. The control valve of deaerator water level is
closed, and the condensate will flow through the minimum flow recirculation system. When the water level
in condenser hot-well is higher than the setting value, the condenser make up water control valve can be
close, and also condensate will be discharged to CST through the high water level discharge control valve.
The condensate pump will continue running until vacuum of condenser is broken and without other
condensate demands.
LP heater steam side stops prior to the water side, and the stop sequence is from the highest to the lowest
pressure part
If isolation of LP heater for maintenance is not required, the water side of LP heater will remain in the main
route operation state all the time.

4.3. Control philosophy


Normal operation
The operating conditions are depending on the plant load and the condensate pumps are automatically
regulated by adjusting the control station motorized control valves.
Exceptional operation
When a pump trips, the standby pump start to maintain the same condensate water pressure.
