ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY AND ADVERBIAL EXPRESSIONS OF TIME

We use the adverbs of frequency and the adverbial expressions of time to indicate
the number of time an action is repeated during a period of time.

1. Adverbs of frequency

The adverbs of frequency are placed after the subject and before the verb.

100% Always She always goes to the night club to dance.


90% Usually They usually quarrel.
80% Normally I normally go to the gym.
70% Often They often go out for dinner.
50% Sometimes Sam sometimes goes with her husband.
30% Occasionally I occasionally eat junk food.
10% Seldom I seldom read the newspaper.
5% Hardly ever Dan hardly ever drinks alcohol.
0% Never We never go to the cinema. We don’t like it.

But when you use the verb BE, they go after it.

100% Always We are always here.


90% Usually I am usually up at 6:00 a.m.
80% Normally Clara is normally optimistic.
70% Often They are often confused.
50% Sometimes I am sometimes late for class.
30% Occasionally You are occasionally in a bad mood.
10% Seldom Mark is seldom free on weekdays.
5% Hardly ever I am hardly ever angry.
0% Never Kate is never ready on time!
2. Adverbial expressions of time

The adverbial expressions of time are placed at the end of the sentence.

Once /wʌns/ Pam drinks coffee once a day.


Twice /twɑɪs/ day I go to the beach twice a year.
Thrice /θraɪs/ a week Jeff brushes his teeth thrice a day.
3 times month Malcom goes to the gym three times a week.
4 times year Sue watches movies four times a week.
5 times We meet five times a year.

day Lin does yoga every day.


morning I listen to the radio every morning.
week He eats pasta every week.
Every month I do the shopping every month.
year Macy decorates the house every year.
Monday We have a meeting every Monday.
2 days Sam waters his plants every two days.
