Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step- by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module
or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Hello Young Scientists,

Matter can change in many ways. The presence or lack of oxygen

bring changes in materials. By simply exposing some objects to oxygen can
produce various effects. When there is lack of oxygen, it has effects too on
some materials. When heat is applied to some materials, it does not only
cause physical change but chemical change, too.
In this module, you will be learning the effects of presence or lack
of oxygen to materials as well as the effects of applying heat to materials.

MELC: Investigate changes that happen in materials under the following

conditions: presence or lack of oxygen and application of heat
(S5MT-Ic-d-2)

Learning Objectives:

 Identify the changes to materials under the presence or lack of oxygen

 Infer the changes that take place to materials under the presence or
lack of oxygen
 Identify the changes to materials when heat is applied
 Differentiate physical change from chemical change
 Infer the changes that take place when heat is applied to some objects

Jumpstart

Get a piece of santol fruit, eggplant, potato, or apple. Try to slice it

using knife. Take note of the color of it the moment it was sliced. Observe it
for a few minutes.
What have you noticed on the sliced object? Are there any changes
after a few minutes? Did it turn brown? What do you think might have
caused the change in color to take place? Write your answer in your answer
sheet.

Changes in Matter in the Presence or Lack of Oxygen

The presence or lack of oxygen has various effects on materials.

Among these are combustion and rusting. Combustion is the scientific
word for burning. In a combustion reaction, a substance reacts with oxygen
from the air. Combustion reactions happen at high temperatures, and
transfer energy to the surroundings as light and heat. This is why you
see flames when

2

things burn.( https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zypsgk7/articles/zcwxcj6) Without
oxygen, burning will not take place since it supports combustion.

Figure 1. Fire Diagram

black-and-white-rgb

The Fire Diagram shows that three things are needed for fire to occur.
There should be heat, fuel and oxygen. A fire occurs when the three elements
are present in the right amount. The fire continues its flame provided there is
continuous supply of these three elements. Therefore, the lack of oxygen
causes a fire not to continue its flame. For example, if you lit a firewood using
a lighter or a matchstick. The firewood(fuel) will burn with the presence of
air(oxygen) and heat coming from the lighter of matchstick(source of heat).

Figure 2. Iron Rusting

Source: https://www.shutterstock.com/search/rust+nail

The presence of oxygen in the air also causes rusting, the reaction of
iron with oxygen present in the air. Iron as well as iron alloys, rusts because
of a chemical reaction known as oxidation. It takes place when an iron is
exposed to oxygen. When iron is exposed to oxygen, oxidation will convert it
into iron oxide typically a reddish, flaky appearance that becomes
progressively worse overtime. (https://monroeengineering.com/blog/why-iron-rusts-and-
how-to-prevent-it/)

Figure 3. Sliced Apple
Source: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/experts-why-cut-apples-turn-brown/

Fruits and vegetables are also affected by the presence of oxygen. For
example, when an apple is cut, the fleshy part of it changes its color into
brown. This is because the oxygen present in the air reacts with the chemical
present in the fleshy part of the apple. The same thing can be observed in
potato, eggplant and santol.
The lack of oxygen has also negative effect to animals. For example, in
a fishpond that is overly populated fish kill may occur. The most common
cause of fish kills is suffocation due to lack of dissolved oxygen.

Directions: Read the paragraph below. Fill in the blanks with the correct
word to complete the sentences. Write the correct answer in your
answer sheet.

The presence or lack of (1) has various effects on

matter. Among these are (2) and (3) .
Fire will continue its flame if the three elements needed are present which
include (4) , (5) and (6) . In the
(7) of oxygen, fire will not occur.
The reaction of iron with oxygen present in the air causes
(8) . This happens to metals like nails and iron bars. Iron rusts

Lesson Changes in Matter Through
2 Application of Heat

Discover

Heat is a form of energy described as how high the temperature is. Heat
can bring about physical change in matter. Some solid materials melt when
enough heat is applied to them. Example of this is the ice cube. It slowly
melts when it is placed on the table for few minutes. The melting of the ice
cube happens because it absorbs heat from the surrounding. On the other
hand, water subjected to heat evaporates. Like when you hang your washed
clothes under the sun. After hours, the clothes become dry. This means that
the water in your clothes evaporated. Another example is heating a mothball.
This process is called sublimation, conversion of a solid material into gas
without becoming a liquid. Boiling water also is an activity applying heat. The
application of heat through boiling causes the water to evaporate.

Heat does not cause physical change only on matter. It also produces
chemical change to materials. The chemical changes caused by heat are
irreversible. One common example of this is cooking food. The egg your
mother cooked for your breakfast has undergone chemical change through
cooking. You cannot bring back the egg into its liquid form after it was
cooked. Another one is burning. When you burn a tissue paper, ash is
formed.

Applying heat to matter results to physical or chemical change. Physical

change occurs when a material changes in appearance or state without
changing what it is made of. It does not involve chemical reaction, and no
new material formed. Chemical change occurs when the composition of its
molecule changes. A new material or product is formed. There is a change in
size, color, smell, and shape of material.
