Belief of a Muslim

2.2: “Risalah: prophet-hood”

“Risalah” is the second most important belief of Islam after Tauheed. In Islamic
terminology, “Risalah” means transmitting the divine message to the people through
Prophets who are called “Rusul” (‫)رسل‬.
The divine message is given to them through revelation. The Prophets do not say
anything of their own, but only transmit the Sharia’h. The Holy Quran says:

ِ
َ ُ‫َوَما يَنط ُق َع ِن ا هْلََو ٰى* إِ هن ُه َو إِاَّل َو هح ٌي ي‬
*‫وح ٰى‬
“Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed.”
(Surah Najam,3-4)

The difference between Nabi and Rasool

✓ Rasool receives a new Shariah from Allah; where as Nabi follows the
Shariah of the Rasool before him
✓ a Rasool is always a Nabi where as a Nabi may or may not become a Rasool
✓ Rasool face opposition and perform Jihad in order to establish Allah’s word

Need of prophet-hood

1) To preach Allah’s Injunctions:

The basic purpose of the man creation is to worship Allah, so the first need of the
Prophet was to explain the Sharia’h to the people.

2) To reform the society:
The Prophets were sent to reform the society. Allah sent Prophets in every tribe and
in every nation.
3) To practice the Sharia’h:
The Prophet is a preacher, a guide, a teacher and an interpreter. He is the role model
for us in following Sharia’h. Allah says in the Quran:

}ٌ‫سنَة‬ ِ‫ول ا‬ ِ ‫{لََق هد َكا َن لَ ُكم ِِف ر ُس‬

)21 :‫(األحزاب‬ َ ‫ُس َوةٌ َح‬
‫اَّلل أ ه‬ َ ‫ه‬
“And there is a great model for you in the Prophet of Allah ‫ﷺ‬.”

Importance of Prophets
▪ Prophets are divine agents, the transmitters of guidance to the sons of Adam
▪ Prophets taught man knowledge about Allah, His names & Attributes. Without
them, man would have never known Allah
▪ Through the Prophets, man has been able to gain an insight into creation. Thus,
man gets to know the purpose of his creation
▪ Prophets are the models for mankind. They distinguish themselves in the human
society by their pious & meaningful life.
▪ Their nature and disposition is pure. In all affairs their attitude is that of nobility
and truthfulness

“It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting
to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom
although they were before in clear error.” (Surah Jumuah:2)

WHAT IS A MIRACLE?
The belief in prophet-hood demands respect of all the Prophets without exception.
They were all the best in their communities morally and intellectually. They were
supported by miracles to prove their prophet-hood. This affirmed that the message
is from Allah, not from their own ideas.
A miracle is an extraordinary event that Allah Almighty brings about at the hands of
a Prophet:

FINALITY OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD ‫ﷺ‬

The Holy Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬is the last of all Prophets. After him no other
prophet is going to be sent by God. It is mentioned in the Quran:

}*‫اَّللُ بِ ُك ِل َش هى ٍء َعلِيم ا‬
‫ني َوَكا َن ا‬ ِ‫ول ا‬
َ ِِّ‫اَّلل َو َخ َاَتَ النابِي‬
ِ ‫{ما َكا َن ُُمَ ام ٌد أََب أَح ٍد ِمن ِرجالِ ُكم ول‬
َ ‫َكن ار ُس‬ َ ‫َ َ ِّ ِّ َ ه‬ َ
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Apostle of Allah
and the last of the prophets; and indeed Allah knows all.” (33:40)

Salient features of Prophet ‫’ﷺ‬s Prophet-hood:

 Why is there no need for a Prophet now?
After studying the book of Allah, we find that Prophets were sent for any of these
four possible reasons:
➢ There is a nation towards whom no Prophet had been sent:

)٦:‫آَب ُؤ ُه هم فَ ُه هم غَافِلُو َن*} (يس‬ ِ ِ ِ

َ ‫{لتُنذ َر قَ هواما اما أُنذ َر‬
“So that you may warn a people whose fathers were not warned so they are unaware.”

)٢٤:‫{إِن ِِّم هن أُام ٍة إِاَّل َخ ََل فِ َيها نَ ِذ ٌير*} (فاطر‬

“And there was no nation but that there had passed within it a warner.”
➢ A Prophet was sent but after him the teachings got distorted and there is a need
to confirm the message sent by Allah:

)٥٠:‫ي ِم َن الت هاوَراةِ} (آل عمران‬

‫ني يَ َد ا‬ ِ ِ ‫{وم‬
َ ‫ص ِّدقاا لِّ َما بَ ه‬
َ َُ
“And [I have come] confirming what was before me of the Torah”
The confirmation here is of the “Torah” sent by Allah and not the distorted version.
➢ A prophet was sent but his teachings catered a specific nation or were applicable
for a specific time and could not be followed by the entire humanity. This is why
we see the need of a New Sharia’h brought by the Prophets:

)٥٠:‫ض الا ِذي ُح ِِّرَم َعلَهي ُك هم ۚ } (آل عمران‬ ِ

َ ‫{وِألُح ال لَ ُكم بَ هع‬
َ
“And to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you.”
➢ A prophet was sent to assist another Prophet like Haroon A.S was send with
Musa A.S to assist him in preaching Fir’oun. Allah says:
ٍ ِ‫وُهَا فَ َع ازهزََن بِثَال‬
)١٤:‫ث فَ َقالُوا إِ اَن إِل هَي ُكم ُّم هر َسلُو َن*} (يس‬ ِ ‫{إِ هذ أ هَر َسلهنَا إِل هَي ِه ُم اثه نَ ه‬
ُ ُ‫ني فَ َك اذب‬

“When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with
a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you.”
After understanding this we see that none of these needs exist now and so there is
absolutely no need of another Prophet.

 Firstly, our Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬was sent towards the entire humanity, so there is no
nation bereaved of this honour. Allah says:

)١٥٨:‫َج ايعا} (األعراف‬ ِ‫ول ا‬

َِ ‫اَّلل إِل هَي ُكم‬ ُ ‫ااس إِِِّّن َر ُس‬
‫ه‬ ُ ‫{قُ هل ََي أَيُّ َها الن‬
“Say,[O Muhammad],"O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all”
 Secondly, the responsibility of protecting the Quran has been taken by Allah.
Allah says in the Quran:

)٩:‫الذ هك َر َوإِ اَن لَهُ َْلَافِظُو َن*} (اْلجر‬

ِِّ ‫{إِ اَن َهَنن نَ ازلهنَا‬
ُ
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.”

 Thirdly, the teachings preached by our beloved Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬caters the needs of
all nations in all times. Allah says:
ِ ‫هكتاب تِب ي ااَن لِِّ ُك ِل َشي ٍء وه ادى ور هْحَةا وب هشر ٰى لِل‬
ِ َ ‫{ونَ ازلهنَا َعلَي‬
َ ‫هم هسل ِم‬
)٨٩:‫ني *} (النحل‬ ُ َ ُ َ َ َ ُ َ ‫ِّ ه‬ َ ‫ك ال َ َ ه‬ ‫ه‬ َ
“And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as
guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.”
 Lastly, Allah mentions that he has completed the message for mankind in the
Quran:

)٤:‫(املائدة‬ } ۚ ‫اْل هس ََل َم ِديناا‬

ِ‫يت لَ ُك ُم ه‬
ُ ‫ض‬ ََ َ ‫ه‬ ُ ‫هت لَ ُك هم ِدينَ ُك هم َوأَ هْتَ هم‬
ِ ‫ت َعلَهي ُكم نِ هعم ِِت ور‬ ُ ‫{الهيَ هوَم أَ هك َمل‬
“This day I have completed for you, your religion and completed My favor upon
you and have approved for you Islam, as religion.”

Authentic Ahadees proving the finality of our Prophet ‫ﷺ‬

✓ “I am the last of the Prophets, there is no Prophet after me."
✓ "The parable of me and the Prophets is that of a man who built a house, and he built it
well, completing it, and beautifying it, but he left a space for one brick. So the people began
going around the house amazed at it, saying "If only the space for that brick was filled.' And
I am, with regards to the Prophets, in the position of that brick." And with this chain, from
the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬that he said: "Upon the Day of Judgement I will be the leader of the
Prophets and their spokesman, and the bearer of their intercession, without bragging."

➢ The recitation of Zabur (Psalms) was made easy for him. He used
to order that his riding animals be saddled, and would finish
reciting the Zabur before they were saddled
➢ He would never eat except from the earnings of his manual work
➢ Even the mountains, birds and Jinn were under his control. He
understood the languages of birds
