WHAT DID RIZAL DO IN DAPITAN

Rizal desribed himself as half physician, half- merchant. He had set up a
commercial firm and had been teaching the poor inhabits to unite in business so
that they would be more independent and less exploited. He showed the fishermen how
to weave and use such nets to mutiply their cath.

The jesuits, for their part, Believe that his islation the exile would be more
receptive to their plan to convert him.

After a montj after Rizal arrived in Dapitan, FATHER FRANCISCO DE PAULA SANCHEZ was
transferred from Manila to Dapitan to be near his favorite Student.
They went on Arhceological excavations together, and built a HUGE RELIEF MAP OF
MINDANAO IN TOWN PLAZA.

FATHER PABLO PASTELLS, too tried by correspondence to reconvert Rizalto the

Cathilicism of obidience.

HE BELIEVED THAT GOD WAS REVEALED NO IN A MON MADE INSTITUTIONS BUT IN NATURE'S
GRANDEUR, AND HE QUOTED THE BIBLE TO SUPPORT THIS BELEIF

FATHER PASTEL BLAMED RIZAL'S MIS FORTUNE ON PERSONS wo had misled him. RIZALS REPLY
WAS MEMORABLE: "I ASPIRE NOT TO FAME OR RENOWN. I HAVE SEEN A LITTLE LIGHT AND ALL
I DESIRE IS TO SHOE IT TO MY COUNTRYMEN"

Rizal was upset bu the haste with which he was banished, the lack of due process,
and the uncertainty of his future in that strange environment. how ever, he was
not one to sit around and sulk: If the town was deadly dull, why he would rouse it
into activity! During his 4 yrs in exhile. HE INSPIRED THE TOWNS PEOPE WITH HIS
ENERGY AND ENTHUSIAM. HIS UNDER TAKINGS AS DOCTORS, TEACHER, FARMER, ENGINEER,
BUSINESSMAN, ARTIST ARCHITECT BUILDER, LANDSCAPER, BOTANIST ZOOLOGIST SPORTMANS,
MULTILINGUAL SCHOLAR, ADVISER, AND FRIEND WOULD CHANGE THE FACE OF DAPITAN FOREVER.

ONE LUCKY DAY, Rizal, Carcinero and another Spaniard won 20,000 Pesos in a lottery.
With part of his share of the prize, Rizal bought PICTURESQUE PIECE OF LAND CALLED
TALISAY. PROPERTY OF 16 HECTARES, He Built him self a square house A CASA CUADRA-
from where he could see Dapitan bay and hear murmur of rivuket flowing down rocky
hill side.

HE COVERERD HIS PLANTATION WITH

Fruits trees those grew in hin CALAMBA ORCHARD- Lanzones, Makopa, Santol,
Mangosteen, Mango, Jack fruit, Coconut as well as coffee, Cacao and Abaca.

He carved out trails to make "CIVILIZED FOREST", with well- marked paths , stairs
and benches. " Im far from endless and tireless scientific life of Civiled Europe"
HE WROTE BLUMENTRITT".

The Greates Tribute to his honesty was paid by those who had trapped him like a rat
and then permitted him to wander alone trapped him like rat and then permitted him
to wander alone for four years along coast of Zamboanga.
Rizal promised not to violate the temrs of his Exile, and Jose RIzal never broke a
promise. He Had adjusted to the fact that he was "The Prisoner" or the "The
Daported One" He never left CASA REAL to visit his plantation without the
commandant's permission, and he never failed to return at the appointed hour.

He lost track of political developments outside dapitan, for he and politics had
parted company for the time being. News reach him however that priars had prevented
Governor- General Despujol out of Office. Despujol was replaced by RAMON BLANCO Y
ERENAS a more liberal successor but still prone succumb to friar pressure.

Certain Persons apparently resented Carniceros Friendly treatment of Rizal. The

commandant was removed on pretex that he had ordered a cow killed on Good friday.
He was replaced in MAY 1893 BY DOCTOR JUAN SITGES Y PICHARDO.

Carniceros transfer left Rizal bereft. when the commandant left, He carried with
him many reminders of his Filipino friend, such as
GOLD-TOPPED CANE, A BUST CARVED BY RIZAL HIMSELF.
and POEM WRITTEN FOR COMMANDANT ON HIS BIRTHDAY CARNICINERO REFUSED THE 90 PESOS
HIS TENANT OFFERED HIM IN EXCHANGE FOR 6 MONTHS BOARD. IN GRATITUDE, RIZAL ASKED
MANUEL HIDALGO, HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW, TO BUY A GOLD RING OR CHAIN TO BE SENT TO
CARNICERO AS A GIFT.

Doctor SITGES Distanced himself from the deportee. Rizal had to eat alone in his
room instead of the main dining table. Hurt by sitges disrust, Rizal asked for
permission to live in another house close by. Sitges gave his permission, but
required the exile to present himself at the casa Real morning, noon and night.

New Restrictions were imposed on the prisoner. Bandillos, or public notices, were
posted to cut off any contact between him and the outside world. Vessels Landing in
Dapitan were strictly watched. Mail could not be deposited in the post office by
vessel without the administrator's permission. Naturally Rizal resented these
restrictions.

Letter form BLumentrit arrived, and Sitge/Privacy. He wrote letters in several

languages -German, French, English and Italin -wih a smattering of Greek ad Latin
Quotations.

To keep him from brooding "The sad thoughts which always fill the sou of an exile."
Blumentrit encuraged him to write a Tagalog Grammar Book. " All the grammars
written by friars have their particular and special merits", wrote Blumentrit, but
their authors were not Tagalog, and they did not have the general linguistic
knowledge which made you shine in the circle of French, English, Dutch, German and
Austrian Orientalists.

RIZAL WROTE BACK:

" TU SOLUS FIDDELIS REMINISCERIS MEI". (YOU ALONE HAVE REMAINED FAITHFUL TO ME) HE
Confessed that, being an Oriental, He was a fatalist- he believed much future good
come from present evil. He also learned VIsayan Language and now knew how to paddle
a canoe! he was grateful for al the books and Magazines sent by friends.

The Exile was equaly thoughtgul. he sent blumentrit a statue of " Prpmetheus
Bound" a copy he had carved from memory. It showed the figure of a strong man bound
and helpless, as if to symbolized Rizal, ANother Statuette entitled "The triumph of
Science over Death" was according to the Astrian, Also symbolic of Rizal ,whose
"noble ideas, would triumph over death. "Blumentrit also received a statuette of a
beggar and a young holding a bilao, or flat basket a bust of Augustus Caesar, And a
wallet made of a forest vine called NITO. Blumantrit remarked with Gratitude, "The
Filipinos have such a rich heart that one compete with them.
