COUNSELOR CORNER
Developing a Growth Mindset
Dear Mesa Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed their three-day weekends last month! This March, students
are preparing for testing season. Thus, I wanted to share a powerful way you can
support your child's academic success during this time by introducing the concept of
a Growth Mindset. Having a growth mindset is believing that you can always get
better at something with practice, as opposed to fixed mindset, which is believing that
people are born with certain abilities and that they will never be able to improve. For
example, some children believe that certain people are naturally good at math, while
others are not. This is an example of a fixed mindset. Utilizing a growth mindset would
propose that anyone can get better at math as long as they practice, put in their best
effort, and ask for help when they need it. Parents can help their children develop a
growth mindset by giving them positive affirmations, using mistakes/failure to teach
lessons, and praising their effort. Below are some other examples of things you can tell
your child when they are stuck in a fixed mindset along, with books and videos to
share with them to cultivate a growth mindset.
