Meet Your Counselor

Barranca Elementary School

Dear Barranca Families,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! My name is Kendra Canham, and I am the
Counselor at Barranca Elementary School. This is my first year at Barranca and in Covina-
Valley Unified School District, and I am so excited to be working with you all. I received my
Master's in Counseling from Chapman University, along with my Pupil Personnel Services
Credential. I am honored to be able to work with your child(ren) and help support them to
blossom and develop into the best learners and little people they can be.

My counseling services are based on the American School Counseling Association model
and our district standards. It includes a variety of services for all students and is designed
to assist with interests and issues related to the stages of student growth in the areas of
academic, personal, emotional, career, and social development. School Counselors differ
from mental health therapists in that we provide students with short-term interventions,
typically between 6-8 weeks. If additional support is needed, we collaborate with families
to discuss options for outside support. Collaborating with community agencies to make
referrals to other support professionals is an essential part of servicing students and
families.

This coming year I will be counseling students individually, in small groups, and presenting
school-wide lessons to every grade level to support our students' Social Emotional Needs.
Additionally, I will be supporting teachers and collaborating with staff to support the
emotional needs of the school community.

If you have any questions regarding counseling services, please feel free to contact me by
email at kcanham@c-vusd.org, or you can click here to request counseling services or
resources. I am at Barranca every Tuesday and Friday from 7:45am-3:45pm. I am here to
support you in any way that I can!

Sincerely,
Kendra Canham
Barranca Counselor
