I INTRODUCTION
I-1. SCOPE
The purpose of this manual is to provide a functional installation and configuration guide
for the Solid State Quick Access Recorder (SSQAR) P/N : 200-E20-XXXX, used as part
of an improved flight recording system.
The flexibility of the product and its adherence to the functional characteristics of ARINC
573/717 and ARINC 429 allow its installation on most aircraft types with or without
basic DFDAU/DFDR provisions.
The SSQAR utilises industry standard re-writable PC-Card (PCMCIA) disk media,
providing a significant increase in storage capacity and improvements in reliability over
existing recorders.
. Simultaneous recording of several input lines : ARINC 573, ARINC 429, RS422, and
Discrete,
. Parameter selection and sampling modes available for each ARINC 429 input line,
. All recordings are precisely tagged with date, time and aircraft settings,

The SSQAR utilizes industry standard type II PCMCIA Cards. So far, the capacity of such
storage media ranges up to 2 Giga Bytes.
The following table presents some of the most currently used models. For reference
purpose, an estimate of ARINC 573/717 data capacity is calculated for three different
data rates.
Page : 12
The SSQAR has been designed to minimize the cost of ownership for customers. The
lower life cycle cost is driven by three main factors :
The board is a single circuit card that achieves all the required flight
data parameter sampling and recording and controls all states and
modes of the system. This board also includes the PCMCIA Reader /
Writer management and electrical interface.

The SSQAR ARINC 429 inputs are provided in 32-bit ARINC 429 words received
individually at an expected rate equivalent to the operator programmed data rate. The
sampling of each one of the labels received is defined by the user and up loaded to a non
volatile memory of the equipment.
The equipment may acquire the ARINC 429 labels according to one of the following
methods:
a) Label Recognition.
When the equipment has been up-loaded with the relevant data, it may acquire up to
64 user defined ARINC 429 labels, each one being sampled at a specific rate.
Each ARINC 429 input line of the SSQAR shall record the ARINC 429 labels as they
are received.
Each available ARINC 429 input line of the unit may be assigned one method or the other.

The SSQAR utilizes industry standard type II PCMCIA Cards. So far, the capacity of such
storage media ranges up to 2 Giga Bytes.
II-5.3.1. OVERVIEW
The SSQAR has been built using a minimal interface to aircraft systems and using only
power and data inputs. As such, most failures of internal circuitry will result only in non-
functioning of the SSQAR itself. Such non-functioning will result in the non-availability of
data when the PC Card is downloaded.
The SSQAR incorporates software and hardware to support the Built In Test Equipment
(BITE), the purpose of which is to detect equipment failures or degradations that will not
allow the unit to operate normally.
The BITE techniques, used in the SSQAR to achieve the specified performance, are as
follows :
On “Power up”, the date and time values are checked for accuracy. Failure of either of
these checks will cause the clock to reset to a fixed default value.
Page : 24
The front of the unit has 4 LEDs showing the following SSQAR status :
a) FAILURE
b) LOW CAPACITY
c) READY / RECORD
d) CONFIGURATION
When the unit is working properly, the LEDs illuminate in the following sequence:

Page : 26
The SSQAR contains the necessary circuitry to achieve a complete monitoring of the
incoming aircraft power supply and perform the relevant actions in order to ensure a
safe data recording process.
When a power failure occurs, the SSQAR enters a Power Down function. The recording
continues while in the Power Down function. If the power failure condition exists for more
than 1 second, “housekeeping” tasks are performed to save all pointers, flush any data
contained in buffers to the PCMCIA card and update all relevant indexes. If the power is
recovered after 1 second but before a hardware reset is issued, the record function is
re-activated. If power does not recover, recording ceases until power is applied again and
initialisation is completed.
The download and readout of the recorded data is performed by a ground support
equipment composed of a standard laptop or desktop PC running the Professional
Ground Station (PGS) software P/N : 100-0100 or 100-0200.
This PGS software has been designed to readout and plot precisely the recorded
parameters and to provide automatic Flight Data Analysis in accordance with
FOQA/HOMP requirements. The PGS software is Windows 98/NT4/2000 and XP
compatible.

The data stream of this input is self detected by the unit at power up. There is no need
for program pin selection.
The type of these inputs (High Speed or Low Speed) and the labels to be sampled are
defined by the up loadable configuration (See section V-5).
Discrete Inputs
The type of these discrete input is “Open/GND”. When the switch is closed, a “1” logic
level is assumed by the unit, when the switch position is open, a “0” logic level is
assumed by the unit.

III INTERCHANGEABILITY
All equipment is directly interchangeable - both mechanically and electrically - with other
equipments bearing the same part number and having the same modification status.
All sub-assemblies within the equipment are also interchangeable with others bearing
the same part number and having the same modification status.
IV MAINTENANCE
Other than the BITE system, in-depth diagnostics of the equipment can be performed
by connecting a PC/terminal to the RS232 interface. These tests are more time
consuming than those performed during “Power-up” self test and can be performed in
situ. See section V
“On condition” maintenance applies to the SSQAR, as far as it is practicable, using the
BITE to identify unit failure.
Exception to this is for the RTC backup battery. It is recommended that the RTC backup
battery be replaced every 10 years.
The average repair time, including testing of the repaired equipment, is 6 hours.
V-1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this section is to help the operator setting up the SSQAR P/N : 200-E20-XXXX
recording parameters after it has been installed to the aircraft.
Page : 33
V-2. GLOSSARY
Configuration Program
A Configuration Program defines which inputs the SSQAR must record. This
Configuration Program also includes the details of the aircraft that will be attached to
every recording file (Type, SN, Tail ...)
The Configuration Program is setup by the operator using a dedicated software : SSQAR
CONFIG.EXE. This software creates a file named CONFIG.CFG that the SSQAR uploads
from a dedicated PCMCIA Card.
Software Release
A Recording PCMCIA Card is a card used for every day record of flight data. A Recording
PCMCIA Card must not contain any Configuration Program or Software Release : The
SSQAR never records any flight data on a card that would contain a Configuration
Program or Software Release.
The operations described hereafter may require one of the following tool and software :
. A cable P/N : 200-C01 used for monitoring the messages that the SSQAR echoes.
. The Windows software “hyperterminal” - See configuration of Hyperterminal below.
. The manufacturer software “SSQAR Config.exe” that affords the operator to setup the
recording requirements (Configuration Program).
. A dedicated PCMCIA Card P/N : 200-T01 to upload the new Configuration Program.
. A dedicated PCMCIA Card P/N : 200-T02 to upload a new software release.
. A blanks that simulates the door being closed.
Page : 34
The hyperterminal software is part of Windows operating system and should be found in
the Program > Accessories > Communication submenu of the computer.
Before the program operates normally, it is necessary to set up the communication port
settings as depicted here:
The following instructions will allow the operator to view the messages sent by the
SSQAR:
REMINDER : The unit has been designed to match the DO160 C standards in terms of
power supply micro cuts : When powered on, the unit first wait until its internal
capacitors have sufficient power charge to satisfy this requirement. As a consequence,
the unit does not echoes anything to the monitor for 5 seconds after it has been
powered on.
Page : 35
After the POST (Power On Self Test) is achieved (approximately 10 seconds), the
following messages display into the hyperterminal window
Page : 36
No previous record file <05080006.DAT> present on disk. Creating a new disk file and
Record file <05080006.DAT> successfully created and open starting the recording of data
REC State -> RECORD_BLOCK
NOTE : When the SSQAR has just been installed to the aircraft and is powered up for
the first time, it may take some time before the unit achieves the POST (Power On Self
Test). This is due to the fact that the unit searches for the actual rate of incoming
ARINC 573/717 data stream. This time to complete may be up to 2 minutes long.
When the unit is powered down, it stores these actual settings to a non volatile memory.
On next power up the unit restores these saved setting from its memory and only
performs one check to ensure that they are still matching the aircraft characteristics.
Assuming that these characteristics remained identical (i.e. : the unit has not been
moved to another type of aircraft), the POST does not take more than 10 seconds.

V-5.1. PURPOSE
The unit has been designed in such a way that its inputs may easily be customized to the
operator requirements. The user may decide to activate or not each one of these inputs
according to the aircraft wiring and to the types of flight data he wants to record.
These settings can be changed and updated by the operator at any times.
A software has been released to set up the configuration of the SSQAR. This software
is called SSQAR Config.exe.
The screen below displays when the software is launched. Within this sole screen, the
operator configures the SSQAR’s inputs and can identifiy the aircraft it is mounted to.
Note : All the settings uploaded to the unit will be attached with every flight data file
that the SSQAR writes to the PCMCIA card. Thus any of these files may be easily
identified and decoded by the operator even when the origin is unknown.

ARINC 573
. This part permits the operator to decide if the ARINC 573/717 input line must be
recorded. In case this input is selected, the operator can define which type of ARINC
573/717 encoding is expected on the input.
Discrete
. This part permits the operator to select if the Discrete input lines must be recorded.
. In case some Discrete inputs are selected, one of them can be used as a RUN
CONTROL command : This command determines when the recorder starts and stops
recording: In case no RUN CONTROL is activated, the unit starts recording on power
ON and stops recording on power OFF. With this command, the operator can define the
start and stop of recording when one of the discrete input value passes 1 or 0.
ARINC 429
. This part permits the operator to select the ARINC 429 input label to be recorded :
For each one of the channels available, the operator defines :
Page : 39
NOTE : The operator must remember that the greater the number of ARINC 429
recorded labels is, the larger the size of the flight data file disk file will be.
When the selection is completed, the operator clicks the “Save” button to write the
configuration to disk.
Notes : The software records the configuration program into a file named CONFIG.CFG.
Unless for backup purposes, the name must not be changed as this is the name that is
recognized by the SSQAR.
The PCMCIA Card P/N : 200-T01 is used to upload a new configuration program ONLY. As
long as the SSQAR finds the CONFIG.CFG on the disk it will NOT record any flight data
to it.
Page : 40
To upload the new configuration program that has been setup, process as follows :
At the end of the process, note that the PCMCIA Card P/N : 200-T01 now contains two
files : The original CONFIG.CFG and a file FBCONFIG.CFG. Both should match exactly. The
second one is a copy of the memory of the unit after it uploaded the new configuration
from the PCMCIA card. The FBCONFIG.CFG file may be used for checking purposes.
