STUDY GUIDE 1: GENERAL CHEMISTRY 1

GRADE LEVEL GRADE 11

TOPIC/TITLE NATURE OF MATTER
WEEK/S: WEEK 1
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Please make sure that you read and understand everything written in this module. Also,
try to answer and accomplish all the activities contained in this module. Be guided with the
meaning of the following symbols:
 It contains the general instructions before proceeding with the module. It is
important that you READ this!
 These are the activities that you need to do in the module.
 These are the questions that helps you monitor your learning progress of the
module.
I. INTRODUCTION
Hello and welcome everyone! I am happy to know that despite this difficult times we are
facing because of the COVID-19 pandemic you decided to accept the challenge and continue
with your education. As we begin the school year with this new normal, I would like you to keep
in mind that regardless of the distance, we will still be working together to help you finish the
school year so I want you to set your focus and attention in learning.
II. OVERVIEW OF THE LESSON
Matter is everything around us, both visible and invisible to the naked eye. In the first
chapter of this subject, we learn about the behavior of matter, its properties and characteristics.
III. OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON
Before we proceed studying and learning this module, I want you to remember the
following objectives that you need to achieve:

o Use properties of matter to identify substances and to separate them

o Recognize the formulas of common chemical substances
o Compare consumer products on the basis of their components for use, safety, quality and
cost, and
o Describe various simple separation techniques such as distillation, chromatography

IV. DISCUSSION AND SELF CHECK

The modern knowledge of matter as being composed of atom, and of still smaller
fundamental particles, resulted from a long history of suppositions, logical thinking, and
experimentation.

Nature of matter
According to Democritus, the first person to ever study atoms, all things are made up of a
very small yet indestructible particle called “atomos”. This particle varies on what object it
consists. But Democritus is not able to give a concrete explanation nor give plausible evidences
on his claims until John Dalton had the same interests on his works. Dalton gave a clearer
explanation of the concept and became the father of the atomic theory. Read more about the
theory on your book on page 5.
 What can you say about the development of atom?

Properties of Matter
Each substance has a characteristic set of properties that help identify it among other
substances. These properties can be classifies as physical or chemical and extensive or intensive
properties. To know more about the properties of matter, turn your book on page 9-10.
 What distinguishes physical from chemical properties?

Classification of matter
Matter can either be classified as a pure substance or a mixture. Pure substances are
characterized by an unchanging or specific composition. A mixture, on the other hand, is
composed of different pure substances that are physically combined in variable proportions.

HOMOGENEOUS HETEROGENEOUS
ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS
As shown in the, it illustrates the classification and sub-classification of matter.
To know more about the classification of matter, turn your book on page 11-16 and
answer the following questions:
 How can you tell if a certain substance is an element or a compound? Cite
examples and supporting evidences.

 How will you separate the components of a mixture?

Consumer products
Any item often bought for consumption is considered consumer product. The most
common are products for household cleaning which includes bleach, soaps and detergents, and
products for personal care which includes makeup, lotion and toothpaste.
 What makes matter solid, liquid or gas?

 How can you say that one substance is different from another?

 What pure substances and mixtures can you consider essential and why?

 How do you choose which consumer products to buy?

V. EVALUATION
 Complete the tables below.
A. Identify the following materials whether they are an element or a
compound.
Matter Classification Matter Classification
Oxygen Mercury
Air Vinegar
Water Silver
Neon Carbon
Gold Iron
B. Identify the following set of substances whether they result to a
heterogeneous or a homogeneous mixture.
Set of Substances Classification Set of Substances Classification
Coffee and water Ash and water
Vinegar and Pebbles and vinegar
