"The Values of Indigenous People in the Community"

In Quezon Province mostly in Lucena area, the Badjao, like many of the
Philippines’ indigenous peoples, are one of a neglected tribe in the Philippines.

Regarding about their background on culture, beliefs and costume, many Badjao
of the east coast retain their seaborne lifestyle, together with remnants of traditional
beliefs. Focusing on their mode of dressing the traditional attire of a Badjao is the
“patadjong.” It has many uses. They are made large enough to fit any person and are
used by both men and women as a skirt or gown tucked at the chest level. A woman’s
typical accessories are jewelry and colored combs. The bracelet is the most popular
ornament. Other pieces of jewelry are the pendant, earring, ring, necklace, and anklet.
they wear such richly colorful clothes, often made by hand from traditional dastar fabric.

Poverty hinders their capability to go to school. Since they have no money to buy
their daily meals, pay transportation expense, and purchase school uniforms and
projects they quit schooling. Bullying is also a factor why they stop attending classes.
Badjaos experience discrimination and self-fulfilling prophecy. They were tagged as
slow learner, have poor hygiene, and have low emotional quotient. Because of a
language barrier, they have difficulty interacting with other people and expressing their
ideas and needs. They are always left out in learning academic subjects. They lack
moral and financial support to continue their education.Indigenous peoples’
dependence on the land for food, shelter, identity and survival has resulted in a deep
respect for that land and a need to conserve it.

As a student, I think that best option for me to help to the crisis of Indigenous
People is to join in a group of organization that developing an "Outreach Program"
advocating the rights of the Indigenous people in our community. Also, I should make a
plan to support Indigenous communities in my local area just by simply donating money
to local Indigenous organizations, supporting their movements and their campaigns for
the better life and better opportunities for them. Differences between us are what make
life so interesting. So embrace the differences between ourselves and others from
different cultures. The best way to respect people from other cultures like Indigenous
tribes is to strike a balance between curiosity and appreciation. One simple good act
can make a great difference.
