While all Asian countries have arguably affected the Western world’s
media to some degree, it is perhaps Japan which has created
the longest lasting and most profound developments.
From film to television and even gaming, we want to take a brief
look at just how influential Japanese media has been, and
w h y i t r e m a i n s s u c h a p o w e r f u l f o r c e t o t h i s d a y.
From manga, anime, idols, and video games to film and television,
Japanese popular culture has become a topic of global curiosity
and fascination both inside and outside academia. References to
Japanese popular culture abound in the mainstream media,
often in the idiom of the cool, bizarre, or deviant.

According to the Government of Japan, 69.0% of the population practises Shintō,
66.7% practise Buddhism, 1.5% practise Christianity and 6.2% practise other
religions as of 2018. However, people tend to identify with no religion when asked
about religious beliefMost Japanese participate in rituals and customs that derive
from some religious traditions. Lifecycle events are often characterized by visits to
shrines and Buddhist temples. The birth of a newborn is celebrated with a formal visit
to shrines and temples about one month old, birthdays of 3, 5, and 7 , and the formal

International migration and mobility raise a host of economic and security
concerns for states in the Global North and the South. The garrison
state linked with the trading state in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The 20th and 21st centuries have seen the emergence of the migration state
, where managing migration is vital for national security and development.
Despite a reputation for social, political, and legal closure and a reticence
about admitting immigrants, Japan is making halting moves toward a
n a t i o n a l i m m i g r a t i o n p o l i c y, w h a t c o u l d b e a ‘ M e i j i m o m e n t ’ w i t h
p o l i c y i n n o v a t i o n a n d p o t e n t i a l t r a n s f o r m a t i o n o f J a p a n e s e s o c i e t y.
The Japanese case is instructive for the study of migration policy as the
only liberal state that has resisted immigration and paid the costs
in termsof sociodemographic, economic, and political challenges.
This article lays out a framework for analysis of Japan as an
emerging migration state and explores the extent to which Japan
has made the transition to a country of immigration.
