terms
exponent

5x2 – 8 constant

Numerical coefficient

(Variable)Literal coefficient

B. Illustrative Example
Subtraction of Algebraic Expression- is just like adding algebraic
expression. Remember that we can only simplified similar or like
terms.

Example:
( 4x +7y-13z) – ( 8x-10z)

Step 1- Arrange the terms of given algebraic expression into like

terms. You may subtract it in column like terms below other like
terms or you may subtract it vertically.

4x +7y-13z
- 8x -10z
Combine Like Terms:

=4x+7y+−13z+−8x+10z

=(4x+−8x)+(7y)+(−13z+10z)

=−4x+7y+−3z

Step 2- Subtract one like term(s) from another like term (s).
Then, get the additive inverse of the second expression
(subtrahend)or change the sign of each term from + to – and
from – to +.

4x +7y-13z
8x -10z
(-) (+)

-4x+7y-3z Step 3- Use the new signs of the terms in

the second expression.

Another Example

( 4x +7y-13z) – ( 8x-10z)
(-4x2 + 3y +10z)- (5x-7y-6z)
(−4x2)+(−5x)+(3y+7y)+(10z+6z)
-4x2 + 3y +10z
(-)5x(+) -7y (+) -6z =−4x2+−5x+10y+16z

-4x2 -5x -10y+16z

Remember

We can only subtract like terms.

Every coefficient of second expression(subtrahend) gets

replaced by additive inverse.
C. Boardwork
Subtract the following algebraic expression.

1. (11x3+4x2-6x-5) - (7x3-x2+2x-14)

2. 5x-3y

3. (-y-6xy) – ( 3x-2xy )

4. (9p2 + 3p ) – ( 4p-2p2)

5. (2d3) – ( 3d3 + 2d2 + 1)

D. Generalization
4x +7y-13z
-8x -10z

1. What is algebraic expression means?

2. What is the most important rule in subtraction of algebraic
expression?
3. What rule will we apply in every coefficient of the second
expression (subtrahend)?
4. How do we know if the given expressions are like terms?

IV. Evaluation
Seatwork
Subtract the following algebraic expression.

1. (4w) – ( 11w+15)

2. (6n) – ( n – 12)

3. (2p+3q) – (4p-13q)

4. (-4x5 +2x) – ( -6x2+3)
