Introduction
Linear superimposition of harmonic signals yield beats. The following experiment emphasizes the difference
between outcome of adding two signals: beats and modulation. Modulation is only produced if the carrier Sc(t)
and modulating signal Sm(t) are combined through a non-linear device, such as diode or transistor. To produce
beats, two signals (in this case, message signal and carrier) are fed to linear quadrupole. This is available in the
form of a summing amplifier on the CF transmitter. Set up the experiment as shown in figure 1 given below.

Procedure
Use the connecting lead to feed the sinusoidal carrier of the CF transmitter (A2 = 2 V) into an input of the output
summer. Feed a sine signal from the function generator with f1 = 2.0 kHz, A1 = 2 V into the other input. Display
sine signal on oscilloscope channel 1. Display the addition of both signals at the output of the summing amplifier
on the oscilloscope channel 2.

Lab Task 1. Sketch the signal curve obtained in time domain through following
the procedure given above. Draw the waveform in figure 2.
Lab Task 2. Transform the signal of lab task 1 into frequency domain and draw
the diagram in figure 3. Determine the amplitude and frequency
values of peaks acquired.
Lab Task 3. Transform the signal into XY modulus. What do you observe, explain
it and draw diagram in figure 2?
Lab Task 4. Repeat the experiment and change the frequency of message signal
from 2 KHz to approx. 20 KHz. Also convert it into frequency
domain and XY modulus. Sketch the diagrams in figures 2 and 3
respectively.
Lab Task 5. Search online the topic: Beats (acoustics). Write your learning in
this lab in your own words. Use extra sheet if needed.
