Speed:

The 40-yard sprint is the most common speed test. It is used at the NFL Combine and many
collegiate sports programs in the United States. It is also used in laboratory methods classes
in academic programs for exercise science and physical education. In addition to American
football, this test is best suited for sports with a long run, such as soccer, field hockey, and
lacrosse. It is also short, quick (7 seconds), and easy to time. This test can also be easily
modified to cover shorter and longer distances, making it more specific for sports like
baseball and basketball.  The main goal, as with all speed tests, is to cover the distance as
quickly as possible, and usually no more than three attempts are made to minimize the
decline in performance caused by fatigue.

Equipment:

 Track or field where the distance can be measured

 Tape measure

 Stopwatch or timing gates

 Cones or tape to indicate start and finish lines

 Personnel at the finish line or at both the start and finish lines

Procedure:

The test consists of a single maximum sprint over 40 meters that is timed.

 A thorough warm-up should be performed, which should include some practice

starts and accelerations.

 Begin in a standing position, one foot in front of the other. The front foot must be
on the starting line at all times.

 This runner should be stationary before beginning. The timing person should stand
at the finish line with one arm raised and call ‘ready,' followed by a quick sweep
down their arm to start the subject (do not call out 'go,' due to the time delay in the
subject hearing the call).

 The tester should start the stopwatch, which is held in the downward sweeping arm,
as the arm sweeps down and finish the stopwatch as their chest passes through the
finish line.
