PETROLEUM PRODUCTION AND ITS GLOBAL CONSUMPTION

Global demand for crude oil in 2019 amounted to 100.1 Million Barrels per day and is projected
to decrease slightly to 100.0 million barrels per day in 2020 due to economic and mobility
impact of COVID -19 (Sonnichsen, N April 2020).
The outlook for long-term demand estimates that the total global demand for oil will amount to
nearly 140 million barrels per day in the year 2040.

The distribution of oil consumption in the organization for economic co-operation and
development in 2017 by sector.

Graph showing the daily demand for crude oil worldwide from 2006 to 2020nin million barrels.

Daily oil consumption by continent from 1980 to 2006

Global oil consumption growth from 2011 to 2025
Composition by weight of hydrocarbon molecules in crude oil

Hydrocarbon Average Range

Alkanes 30% 15 to 60%
Naphthenes 49% 30 to 60%
Aromatics 15% 3 to 30%
Asphaltics 6% Remainder

The exact molecular composition of crude oil varies widely from formation to formation but the
proportion of chemical elements varies over fairly narrow limits as follows:

Composition by weight
Element Percentage Range
Carbon 83 to 85%
Hydrogen 10 to 14%
Nitrogen 0.1 to 2%
Oxygen 0.05 to 1.5%
Sulfur 0.05 to 6.0%
Metal < 0.1%

The most common distillation fractions of petroleum are fuels

Common fractions of petroleum as fuels
Fraction Boiling range oC
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) −40
Butane −12 to −1
Gasoline/Petrol −1 to 110
Jet fuel 150 to 205
Kerosene 205 to 260
Fuel oil 205 to 290
Diesel fuel 260 to 315
