Choose two (2) National Artists that s/he consider as favorites. Then, answer the following questions:

Fernando Amorsolo(1972)

Juan F. Nakpil(1973)

1. What do you find interesting, admirable, and noteworthy about the National Artists that you
have chosen?
- I find Fernando Amorsolo’s love for art noteworthy and admirable because, even he’s near
the last light of his life, near his impending demise and his health is slowly withering, he still
continued painting, nonetheless. I also find his techniques in painting interesting; he was
best known for illuminated landscapes and backlighting techniques in his painting, this
technique is called Chiaroscuro, perfectly capturing the contrast of light and shadow.
- I find Juan F. Nakpil’s works admirable and noteworthy as it captures my interest because of
how his architectural brilliance integrated the strength, functionality, and beauty in
buildings. I admire all his work that still stands today, especially the University of the
Philippines Administration and University Library.

2. Evaluate their artworks. Do the artworks reflect the culture and region of its maker?
- Fernando Amorsolo’s art features landscape art, featuring subjects working in the
countryside which is a stark contrast with his place of birth however, his works featuring the
portrayals of WWII war scenes best suits his stay in Paco, Manila yet, his paintings of brighter
landscapes of the countryside best reflect the overall culture and region of NCR that
depicted their traditions and occupation in a brilliant manner.
- Nakpil’s works has slight baroque influences, this style of architecture was linked with the
counter-reformation and the celebration of wealth of Catholic church. This reflects the
culture and region of its maker because of the religious influences in his work.

3. What is/are their contribution/s in the local art industry?

- Fernando Amorsolo worked as a teacher, a Public Works’ draftsman, Pacific Commercial
Company’s chief artist, he worked on illustrating children’s books and magazines, and he
served as the Director at the School of Fine Arts. He is also known as the “Grand Old Man of
Philippine Art” as he was first to be commended as a National Artist of our country.
- Nakpil’s greatest contribution is that of a belief that there is such a thing as Philippine
Architecture which reflected Philippine traditions and culture. Private Filipino architects are
now able to participate in designing and executing government project by law because of his
fervent depictions and efforts which made him known as the “Dean of Filipino Architects”.

4. What makes his/her artworks different from the artworks of other artists in the other regions of
the country?
- Amorsolo’s artworks differ from the pieces of other artist in the other regions of the country
because of his depiction of light and shadow, how light falls unevenly on the subject,

perfectly capturing its glow on his bright landscape art and help shape, as well as stylize the
image of the ideal Filipino.
- His works features slight baroque influences, French Beaux arts, art deco, and international
modern style. Nakpil was able to create a distinctively Filipino style in architecture reflecting
Philipine traditions and culture in his works.
