Review: The will know if the students have already knowledge

on the difference between Climate and Weather.

Activity: Would You Rather

Directions: I'm going to give you a statement and identify whether it
refers to climate or weather. I want you to hold up one finger if you
believe the statement is referring to climate, and two fingers if it is
referring to weather. You need to open your camera for this activity,
and you have 5 seconds to choose the correct option for each
statement.

1. Yesterday it was sunny but today we have storms. WEATHER

2. Tagaytay experiences a relatively cooler temperature than most

locations in Luzon. CLIMATE

3. Countries, towns, and cities located around the equator experience

hot temperatures throughout the year. CLIMATE
4. Based on the news today, we may experience three days of heavy
rain in Rizal. WEATHER

5. Over the course of a year, the temperature usually varies from 22

degrees Celsius in January to 34 degrees celsius in May. CLIMATE

Enabling lesson objectives

( Motivation: )
I. Teacher will show a video about the different factors affecting
the climate.
II. Video Analysis.

Activity: TIME TO WATCH, LISTEN AND LEARN

GUIDE QUESTION:

WHAT IS THE SHORT VIDEO CLIP ALL ABOUT?

About Steve, who moved to a different city and noticed that the climate in
his new city was different from the climate in his previous city. And he
learned about the different Factors affecting climate of an Area.

B. Development The teacher will discuss first the difference between weather and climate.

The Climate of the Philippines

 The climate of the Philippines is either tropical rainforest, tropical

savanna or tropical monsoon, or humid subtropical (in higher-altitude
areas) characterized by relatively high temperature, oppressive
humidity and plenty of rainfall.

 There are four recognized climate types in the Philippines, and they are
based on the distribution of rainfall. They are described as follows:

Type I. Two pronounced seasons: dry from November to April and

wet during the rest of the year.

Type II. No dry season with a pronounced rainfall from November

to January.

Type III. Seasons are not very pronounced, relatively dry from
November to April, and wet during the rest of the year.

Type IV. Rainfall is more or less evenly distributed throughout the

year.

 There are three recognized seasons: tag-init or tag-araw (the hot

season or summer from March to May), tag-ulan (the rainy season
from June to November), and tag-lamig (the cold season from
December to February). The humid southwest monsoon (May-
October) is known as "Habagat". The cool and dry winds of the
northeast monsoon (November April) are called "Amihan".

Different factors affecting the climate of a place.

 The distance from the equator- At the poles, energy from the sun
reaches the Earth's surface at lower angles, and passes through a
thicker layer of atmosphere than at the equator. This means the
climate is cooler further from the equator.

 Altitude or height above sea level is another factor affecting the

climate of a place. Locations at a higher altitude have colder
temperatures. Temperature usually decreases by 1°C for every 100
meters in altitude. This means that areas with higher altitude tend to
have a colder climate and the place with lower altitude will have a
warmer climate.

 Distance from bodies of water. Coastal areas are cooler and wetter
than inland areas. Clouds form when warm air from inland areas meets
cool air from the sea. Landmasses heat up more quickly than water
bodies as it receives solar radiation from the sun, but also loses heat
more quickly than water. So, in hot seasons, most especially at
daytime, the sea or ocean remains cooler than the continent and
therefore reduces the temperatures of adjacent lands. In cold seasons
and at night, the sea remains warmer and therefore raises the
temperatures of places close to it. We can therefore say that the sea
moderates the climate of the coastal areas by keeping the
temperatures not too high and not too low, or at means.

 The topography of an area. Mountainous areas tend to have more

extreme weather, because it acts as a barrier to air movements and
moisture. One side of the mountain can be dry, while the other side is
full of vegetation. Mountains can cause a physical barrier to rain
clouds.

 Ocean currents act much like a conveyor belt, transporting warm

water and precipitation from the equator toward the poles and cold
water from the poles back to the tropics. Thus, ocean currents regulate
global climate, helping to counteract the uneven distribution of solar
radiation reaching the Earth's surface.

C. Engagement After learning the factors affecting climate of an area, the teacher will
have another activities that will help the students to apply what they
have learned in the discussion.

Activity: Locate Me Please!!!

(This activity can be done asynchronous)

Directions: Using Philippine map, name at least 3 places/areas in our

country experiencing the specific type of climate below. Write your
answer on the data table.

Places
Activity: Identify the Picture Quiz
(Picture quiz about the different factors affecting climate)

Directions: Identify what factor affects the climate of a place

represented by the picture and explain 2-3 sentences how does it affect
climate. You have 5 minutes to finish this activity.

1. Altitude or height above sea level

2. Distance from bodies of water

3. The distance from the equator

4. Ocean currents
5. Topography of an area

IV Assimilation
Generalization:
What are the factors affecting the climate of an specific area?
Why is it important to know and be aware of the different factors affecting
the climate?

To test and evaluate the students’ learning, the teacher will give a short quiz,
1-5 items.

Directions: Read each question carefully. Choose the letter of the correct
answer based on what you have learned in our today’s lesson.

1. How does climate differ from weather?

a. Weather refers to short-term changes in the atmosphere that
changes from time to time whereas, climate refers to the
condition of the atmosphere for a long period of time.
b. weather can be change for a long period of time while
climate changes from time to time.
c. climate and weather are the same.
d. climate is observed several times in a day while weather is for
a long time.

2. Which of the following is NOT a factor affecting climate?

a. Longitude
b. ocean current
c. presence of plants
d. altitude

3. How does distance from the equator affects the climate of a

place?
a. temperature is higher, if the place is near the equator
b. temperature is lower, if the place is near the equator
c. temperature of the place is the same, near or far from the
equator
d. temperature is either higher or lower near or far from the
equator

4. How does altitude affect the climate?

a. the higher the altitude, the cooler the climate
b. the lower the altitude, the cooler the climate
c. climate is not affected by altitude
d. climate is the same in low and high altitude

5. The farther you live from an ocean, the more likely your climate will
be?
a. colder
b. warmer
c. climate never changes if you are near or far from the ocean
d. climate is not related with the distance from the ocean

V. REFLECTION Be Reflective!

The students will write a short essay composed of a minimum of 5 sentences

and a maximum of 10 sentences about "What they have learned in today’s
discussion and why it is essential for them as students to learn this lesson." (This
activity will serve as their assignment.)
