Course Title : ENGINEERING MEASUREMENTS
Nature of Exam : Open Book
Weightage : 30% No. of Pages =3
Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 5
Date of Exam : Sunday, 07/03/2021 (FN)
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1Set. (A) Write short notes on (a) Generalized measurement system and (b) Step response of first order
measurement system. [4]
Q.1Set. (B) Write short notes on (a) Standards and (b) Frequency response of second order system. [4]
Q.1Set. (C) Write short notes on (a) Distortion and (b) Impedance matching. [4]

Q.2Set. (A) Two resistors R1 and R2 are connected in series and parallel. The values of the resistances
are R1 = 30.0 ± 0.1 Ω and R2 = 20.0 ± 0.1 Ω. Calculate the uncertainty in the combined
resistance for both the series and the parallel arrangements. [5]
Q.2Set. (B) Two resistors R1 and R2 are connected in series and parallel. The values of the resistances
are R1 = 75.0 ± 0.05 Ω and R2 = 25.0 ± 0.05 Ω. Calculate the uncertainty in the combined
resistance for both the series and the parallel arrangements. [5]
Q.2Set. (C) Two resistors R1 and R2 are connected in series and parallel. The values of the resistances
are R1 = 60.0 ± 0.1 Ω and R2 = 40.0 ± 0.05 Ω. Calculate the uncertainty in the combined
resistance for both the series and the parallel arrangements. [5]

Q.3Set. (A) A certain length measurement is performed 100 times. The arithmetic mean reading is 10.85
m, and the standard deviation is 0.01 m. How many readings fall within (a) ±0.001m, (b)
±0.01 m, and (c) ±0.1 m of the mean value? Also, calculate the tolerance limits for 90 and 95
percent confidence levels. [5]
Q.3Set. (B) A certain length measurement is performed 100 times. The arithmetic mean reading is 10.85
m, and the standard deviation is 0.005 m. How many readings fall within (a) ±0.001m, (b)
±0.01 m, and (c) ±0.1 m of the mean value? Also, calculate the tolerance limits for 90 and 95
percent confidence levels. [5]
Q.3Set. (C) A certain length measurement is performed 100 times. The arithmetic mean reading is 10.85
m, and the standard deviation is 0.02 m. How many readings fall within (a) ±0.001m, (b)
±0.01 m, and (c) ±0.1 m of the mean value? Also, calculate the tolerance limits for 90 and 95
percent confidence levels. [5]
Q.4Set. (A) The resistance of a resistor is measured in ohms 10 times, and the values determined are given
below. Using Chauvnet's criterion, test the data for possible inconsistency. For the adjusted
data, calculate (1) the mean, (2) standard deviation of the set of measurement, and (3) standard
deviation of the mean value. What will be the maximum and minimum expected value of
resistance for a deviation of 3 times the standard deviation of the mean value?
