1 Laboratory report
Lab1:
Title: Preparing Ethernet Cable

Objective:
• To prepare an Ethernet cable to connect two devices (computers).

Standard Toolkit
• Crimper with RJ-45 die
• Cable tester
• Screw Driver Set
• Pliers set
• cutter
• Cable Stripper
Tools & raw materials needed to prepare LAN cable
• UTP Cable Cat 6
• RJ-45 connector Cat 6
Theory:
• Our Ethernet cable is Cross over cable- because it’s used to connect
two devices of the same type without a hub or router. One end of the
cable is wired in T568A and the other end of the cable is wired in
T568B.

2 Laboratory report
There are two wiring standards for these cables, called T-568A and T-568B.
They differ only in pin assignments, not in uses of the various colors. The
illustration above shows both standards.  With the T-568B specification the
orange and green pairs are located on pins 1, 2 and 3, 6 respectively.T-568A
is supposed to be the standard for new installations, and T-568B is the
alternative. However, most off-the-shelf data equipment and cables seem to
be wired to T568B.
Procedure:
1. Cut into the plastic sheath about 1 inch(2.5cm) from the end of the cut
cable
2. Unwind and pair the similar colors.
3. Pinch the wires between your fingers and straighten them out.
4. Use scissors to make a straight cut across the wires ½ Inch (1.3cm)
from the cut sleeve to the end of the wires.
5. Push all 8 colored wires into the connector. Note the position of the
plastic sleeve. Also note how the wires go all the way to the end, no
short wires.
6. Crimping the cable: carefully place the connector into the Crimper and
squeeze down the handles lightly. The copper splicing tabs on the
connector will pierce into each of the eight wires.
Conclusion & Observation:
 In this lab session, we learned how to make Ethernet cable: how to cut
sheath Cat-6 cable, how to crimp the cables accurately into the RJ-45
connector and how the orientation of the colors determines the
purpose of the cable.

Lab2:
Title: Connecting computers together with an Ethernet Cable

Objective:
• To be able to connect tow computers using Ethernet cable so that
files, folders etc can be shared between these computers.

Component and equipment required

• Computers ,
• LAN cables,
• crimping tools, RJ 45 connectors
Description:
 Computers can be connected one another using a crossover
Ethernet cable. After connecting the computers together with an
Ethernet cable, you will be required to modify the network setting
on one of the computers to establish the cable connection. You will
then have the ability to transfer or share files, and play network
games between both computers.
Procedure:
 Step 1: LAN connection
• Verify that you have a crossover Ethernet cable
• Plug each end of the Ethernet cable into an Ethernet network
port on each computer to connect the computers together with
the cable.
 Step 2: Computer Setting
It is time to setup an IP Address in both computers.
• Open Control Panel window
• Choose Network and Sharing
• From the left side bar, click on Change Adapter Settings
• Right Click on Local Area Connection, Properties, Double click on
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP V4),
• Now enter the IP Address manually by clicking on Use the
Following IP Address,

Computer 1 Computer 2
IP Address: 192.168.1.5 IP Address: 192.168.1.6
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
 Click Ok, Ok.

 Step 3: Sharing Setting

 After that go back to your Network and Sharing Center and
select the Advanced sharing settings’.
 Click on Turn on Network Discovery, when it is on, this computer
can see other networked computers and devices and is visible to
other network computers.
 You can also click on File and printer sharing, to share your files
and printers on other network.
 Step 5: Workgroup Setting
Create the same workgroup for both computers, Workgroup name
setting must be same in both computers but the computer name
should be different to identify the computer. Computers with the
same workgroup name start sharing.
 Right-click on “computer” from the start menu and select
Properties. Then the system properties widow opens up, selects the
“change setting” in workgroup settings as shown below.
 In the “computer Name” tab, click on the “change” button to assign
a WORKGROUP Type workgroup in the workgroup tab in both of
your computers

 Then on the same place change the name of both computers (give
different names) then Click OK.

 Step 5: Test the connectivity
 In Networking, there is a long and rich list of commands we use
to test and troubleshoot networks; one of them is the “ping”
command and it is used here to test if our network configuration
is working.
 Click on the start button and enter cmd in the search box that
appears. This is what you type in the black and white screen
“ping 192.168.6” on comp1 and ping “192.168.5” on comp 2. If
you replies pop up from both computer an 100% sent message
comes we know that our connection works
 Step 6: Find the Shared folder on the Other Computer
 Click on Start > Computer > Network and the folders from the
other PC that are shared appear in the window that appears.

Observation & conclusion:

 We were able to connect two computers using the Ethernet cable we
prepared on lab 1 session.
 We successfully test our connection using the “ping” command on
cmd.
 We were also able to share folders, files between the connected
computers
