OXYGEN CYCLE

Oxygen cycle, along with the carbon cycle and

nitrogen cycle plays an essential role in the
existence of life on the earth. The oxygen cycle is a
biological process which helps in maintaining the
oxygen level by moving through three main
spheres of the earth which are:

Atmosphere
Lithosphere
Biosphere
This biogeochemical cycle explains the movement
of oxygen gas within the atmosphere, the
ecosystem, biosphere and the lithosphere. The
oxygen cycle is interconnected with the carbon
cycle.
Processes that use Oxygen

1. Respiration: When we breathe we

use oxygen and release carbon
dioxide. Similarly, animals and
plants also use oxygen when they
breathe.

2. Combustion: When you burn

something like say, a paper, you
need three things for combustion
to take place - oxygen, fuel and
heat. So when you burn a paper, it
uses oxygen and releases carbon
dioxide and some other gases
3. Decomposition: Decomposition
occurs when plants and animals die.
When this happens, they decompose
and this process uses oxygen and
releases carbon dioxide.

4. Rusting: When things rust, they use

oxygen. This is also known as oxidation.
Rust is a layer of flaky red substance
that easily crumbles into a powder.
Rusting is the common term for
corrosion of elemental oil and its alloys.
Processes that produce oxygen

1. Plants: Plants produce oxygen

during the process of
photosynthesis. During this
process, plants use carbon
dioxide, sunlight and water to
create energy

2. Sunlight: Some oxygen also gets

produced when sunlight reacts
with water vapour in the
atmosphere.
