AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF

AN UNSTABLE ATOM

Hi, I am an unstable atom. People like to call me

Molly. I am known to be the atom with atomic
number 22 that is of course Titanium or Ti. I was
born many years ago in the Titanium family,
well known for their high lustre, low density and
high strength. I’ll tell you my whole story from
the start, of how I became TiCl4 from Ti. When I
was young I was always teased and bullied by
other elements for my pink chubby cheeks and
roly-poly body in addition to that all my family
members used to tell me how I will have to soon
bond with another atom to attain stability in my
life and I should change my structure from roly-
poly to more slimmer and start adjusting. They
also taunted me that if I don’t, no atom would
like to bond with me and I would remain
unstable forever. I loathed this feeling of feeling
not being capable or good enough for someone
but still everyone would force me to become
more slim-trim. All metals would tease me
except only one, my one and only friend
Chlorine. His name was Derrick. While I had
only one friend Chlorine, he had so many
friends, he was able to make almost everyone
his friend and would bond with everyone (as
Chlorine is a halogen), but no one would bond
with me just because of my appearance. Let’s
forward to a few years, nothing had changed in
time, still no one wanted to bond with me.
Subsequently a thought came to my mind, why
don’t I ask Chlorine to bond with me but it came
to my mind, there are already so many
differences between us plus Chlorine was so
popular because he is one of the first 20
elements. But then I thought Chlorine has been
a dear friend to me, he has so many good
qualities too and we have been best friends. So I
asked Chlorine and Chlorine thankfully agreed.
We decided to have a covalent bond. In our covalent
bond I and Chlorine both had to attain stability
of Argon which is 18 as Argon is the nearest
noble gas to both of us. I shared my 4 electrons
to 4 atoms of Chlorine. TiCl4 is important
intermediate in the production of titanium
metal and the pigment titanium dioxide.
