According to Kenton (2021), “strategic management is the management of an

organization’s resources to achieve its goals and objectives“ (para.1). Please let me
consider how strategic management applies to a variety of organizations and define
strategic management as it applies to a modern organization using some examples.
Amazon.com, Inc. (Amazon) is a leading e-commerce company in the world
established in 1994 in Seattle, which mainly provides online retail services (Fleerackers,
2010). They are continuously being one of the most competitive online retailers by
setting their goal “to be earth’s most customer-centric company” and strategically
managing themselves to achieve this vision (Fleerackers, 2010). Amazon has evolved its
business strategy from just being an online bookstore to being an online retailer that
sells a wide range of products, currently over 30 product categories, such as but not
limited to electronics, groceries, and clothes (Fleerackers, 2010). The reason for its
change of business strategy is because it applied customers’ voices into its business
(Fleerackers, 2010). After providing an e-commerce platform for books, customers asked
Amazon to sell other products under its platform as they enjoyed the platform Amazon
has provided (Fleerackers, 2010). Thus, Amazon has responded to their voices by initially
adding music and DVDs to be available on its platform from 1998 (Fleerackers, 2010).
Through this Amazon’s case, we can understand Amazon has been managing and
effectively using its resources to achieve its goal and continuously be customer-centric,
which has led it to be a dominant retailer in the world.
Another example using strategic management will be Toyota Motor Corporation
(Toyota). Toyota was established in 1937 in Japan and its core business is motor vehicle
production and sales (Toyota Motor Corporation, n.d.). Toyota sets “Kaizen (Daily
Improvements)” as their philosophy and tries to find a better way every day in
everything they do (Toyota Motor Corporation, n.d.). It can be said having this value and
managing its resources to achieve it, would be the core strength of Toyota because they
will not be satisfied with the current circumstances and strive for a way to improve, even
though they are already a worldwide leading automobile company. Furthermore, based
on their scientific investigation and analysis of their manufacturing process, they have
created their own production system to minimize defective products and excess
inventories (Toyota Motor Corporation,n.d.). As initially introduced by Taylor,
implementing a scientific approach will be one of the important factors for modern
organizations’ strategic management (Kennedy, 2020). Through this Toyota’s case, we
can understand Toyota has been applying both conceptual and scientific strategies to
manage its resources in order to continuously survive in today’s fast-changing
environment.
To conclude, we can understand strategic management has been applied to
various modern organizations, and “effective strategic management is needed to ensure
the long-term success of firms” (Kennedy, 2020, p. 31). By reviewing the above two
examples, we can also define strategic management to be “the ongoing planning,
monitoring, analysis and assessment of all necessities an organization needs to meet its
goals and objectives” (Tucci, n.d.). Modern companies are learning and inventing
effective strategies that fit themselves to sustainably be competitive in the market.
