 How is globalization defined by the speaker?

- At the moment, globalization is the most powerful force influencing humanity. It has an
impact on every aspect of our lives. The most important aspect, in my opinion, is the
flow of ideas across national borders, which means that we've moved to a world where
there are now approximately five billion people sharing ideas, compared to less than
one billion only 25 years ago before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Flows of goods, services,
products, and finance, as well as physical and virtual trade. The movement of commerce
and supply chains across the Internet is also important. Third, as a result of
globalization, various types of contraband are also flowing across borders. If we do not
manage these negative flows more effectively, globalization may be doomed, because
very bad things, such as pandemics, cyber-attacks, financial crises, and terrorist attacks,
flow alongside very good things. Then there's migration, which is the fourth dimension.
It has been the slowest of the globalization forces because, as we have become more
globalized, countries have actually tightened border controls, except within Europe. This
contradicts other globalization trends.

 What are the pros and cons of globalization?

- The benefits of globalization are similar to the benefits of technological advancement.

They have very similar effects: they increase output in countries, increase productivity,
create more jobs, raise wages, and lower global product prices. The advantages of
globalization have been linked to unprecedented increases in human development
indicators. Technological advancement has accelerated integration both virtually (via
fiber optics, the internet, and mobile telephony) and physically (via vast improvements
in transportation and infrastructure). People, ideas, trade, and an inspiring education
revolution have and will continue to offer enormous potential for poverty alleviation
and economic opportunity. However, the downside of globalization is increased
inequality between and within countries. And the second "side effect" is that the
likelihood of more global shocks and crises is increasing, as is our vulnerability to them.
Little is known about the risks associated with large-scale system interdependencies.
Beyond the financial realm, new systemic risks loom large in areas such as climate
change, water and food insecurity, pandemics, resource scarcity, antibiotic resistance,
bioterrorism, cyber security, and supply chain vulnerability.

 Do you have the understanding and sensitivity you need to interact in a global community in
which other persons may look, act, and think differently than you do?

- I think I have the understanding and sensitivity in order to interact in a global

community because a lack of cultural sensitivity can limit people's ability to effectively
communicate with various groups – both internally and externally – and can alienate or
offend customers, partners, and colleagues working in different regions, countries, and
cultures. Increasing your cultural awareness, or understanding of other cultures, allows
you to have more meaningful interactions with those around you. You're developing
your empathy and respect for others while also celebrating your differences and
similarities. This reduces your likelihood of treating someone differently simply because
they are of a different culture or ethnicity than you. Also, when I was in grade 6 we
moved house from manila to bicol every province has it’s different cultures so when we
moved there I tried to learn about their culture more in able to interact with people and
have friends.

 Are you ready to embrace diversity? How are you going to do it?

- I am ready to embrace diversity, learning about other people can help us learn more
about ourselves, as our own culture is often hidden from us. We may have preconceived
notions about what constitutes acceptable behavior, and we may react negatively when
someone deviates from the norm. To prevent or resolve conflicts in any social
interaction, you should maintain a respectful attitude toward others, be open-minded
and willing to compromise, and know how to work together calmly to resolve conflicts.
As I begin to explore how I differ from others in a respectful manner, I begin to
understand why I think and behave in certain ways based on my upbringing and
previous experiences, and I appreciate that this does not have to be the only way to
approach life. Experimenting with new ways of thinking, ideas, concepts, and values
leads to more complex and deeper thinking and creativity. Diversity on campus benefits
all students, not just those from minority or ethnic groups. The broader perspectives of
students from various backgrounds, as well as the greater variety of teaching methods,
enable everyone to gain more fully from educational experiences. Socially, students
grow in maturity and are better prepared to interact with a diverse world in the future.
Students who embrace opportunities to experience diversity report higher levels of
satisfaction with their college careers and take personal responsibility for broadening
their own social world as well as speaking out against prejudice and discrimination
wherever they encounter it.
