Workshop Goal and Procedure
Goal:
Model the normal impact
of a bullet using an
efficient 2D
Axisymmetric solution

Procedure:
Start Workbench

Set up the problem using


2D Axial Symmetry

Solve the problem

View the results

Step 1 – Start ANSYS Workbench
Start ANSYS Workbench and follow the sequenced steps using the
abbreviations shown below:

• DC = Double Click with Left Mouse Button


• SC = Single Click with Left Mouse Button
• RMB = Right Mouse Button Selection
• D&D = Drag and Drop = Hold Left Mouse Button down on item while dragging
it to new location and then release it (i.e., Copy or Move)

Step 2 – Initiate a 2D Explicit Dynamics Project
2.1 Restore the archived project: “2D Impact.wbpz”

2.2 RMB Geometry > Properties to check if Analysis Type is set to 2D

Step 3 – Specify the Project Units
3.a Select MKS for the Project Units from
the Units List provided

3.b Request that Native Applications in


Workbench have their values be
Displayed in the Project Units

Note:
Engineering Data is native in Workbench, but DesignModeler and Mechanical
are NOT currently (but will be in the future). Therefore, always check that the
local units system is as desired.

Step 4 – Define Engineering Data Material

Step 4 – Define Engineering Data Material

Step 5 – Return to Project

Step 6 – Edit the Model in Mechanical
6.a Edit the model in Workbench Mechanical.

6.c Under Geometry, select Axisymmetric for the 2D

6.d Assign the material Structural Steel NL to the


Bullet part.

6.e Assign the material Aluminum Alloy NL to


the Target part.

Step 7 – Set Element Size and Mesh the Model
7.a Select the Mesh branch

7.b Specify the Mesh Details:


– Physics Preference = Explicit
– Max Face Size = 0.1 meters

7.c Generate the mesh

Step 8 – Define the Initial Conditions
8.a Apply an Initial Velocity Condition to the Bullet as shown.

If the Body

Step 9 – Apply Boundary Condition to Clamp Target

Step 10 – Define the Analysis Settings

Step 11 – Insert a Result Item to Review Later

Step 12 – Run the AUTODYN Simulation
12.a Select Solver Output under Solution Information and Solve the simulation.

Solver Output shows run statistics, including estimated clock time to completion. Errors or warnings
are also noted. Termination due to “wrapup time reached” is expected.

Step 13 – Review the Results
13.a Select Equivalent Plastic Strain
- note the eroded nodes shown as red dots -
(these can be turned off under the view menu)

13.b Animate the results by setting the controls shown below and then pressing
the Animation button.

Step 13 – Review the Results
13.c Select Energy Summary under Solution Information. Note how the Kinetic
Energy of the Bullet is converted into Internal Energy during impact. Also, the
Hourglass Energy is small (always check this).
