Workshop Goal and Procedure
Goal
• Use ANSYS Mechanical to calculated pre-
stress state of a pressurised gas bottle
then simulate an impact with the ground
using ANSYS Explicit Dynamics
Procedure
• Load the ANSYS Mechanical model
• Complete the model set up and solve
• Add an Explicit Dynamics system to the
project
• Complete the model set-up

Quick Instructions
Start Workbench and restore the archive
Gas_Container_Drop.wbpz
Open ANSYS Mechanical
Check Units are set to Metric in Workbench project
Note:
– Symmetry region applied to bottle
– Meshing Preference set to Explicit Dynamics

Apply internal pressure to bottle:

– RMB Static Structural and Insert, Pressure
– Select the 4 internal faces on the gas bottle and
apply to the boundary condition geometry
– Specify a pressure of 1E6Pa

Quick Instructions
On the project page, drag an
Explicit Dynamics System
from the Analysis Systems
section of the toolbox and
drop on Static Structural
Solution cell

This creates a set of links

between the two systems to
share Engineering Data,
Geometry, Model and the
Static Structural Solution

Quick Instructions
Return to the Mechanical system
to complete setting up the Explicit
Dynamics simulation.

Right click on Explicit Dynamics

and Insert, Standard Earth
Gravity. Change Direction to +X.

Specify analysis end time of 2.5e-4

seconds under Analysis Settings

Velocity initial condition
– Change to body select mode
– Apply to the gas bottle geometry
– Velocity of 10m/s
– Select one of the short edges of the plate
using the edge selection tool to specify the
direction
