ACTIVITY SHEET FOR LESSON 4

(Rizal’s Life: Family, Childhood and Early Education)

Name: Sarah A. Jagolino Year & Section: OVI-2 Score:

1. How would you describe Jose Rizal’s childhood in Calamba?

 Jose Rizal was born and raised in the Laguna town of Calamba. He was
Francisco Rizal Mercado's and Doña Teodora Alonzo y Quintos's seventh
child. Jose Rizal, like many Filipino boys, had many happy childhood
memories. He grew up in a happy home, surrounded by parental love, infused
with family joys, and sanctified by prayers. He spent his childhood years in
the midst of such a peaceful, refined, God-fearing family.

2. Did Rizal have a happy childhood? Explain.

 Yes, because he had so many happy and lovely memories. He was raised by
loving parents and thoughtful and caring siblings. He grew up in the lakeside
town of Calamba, which is known for its scenic beauty and the majestic Mt.

3. Was there any manifestation of unusual intelligence on the part of Rizal at a very young age?
Cite examples.

 At the age of three, he learned the alphabet.

 At the age of seven, he learned the Latin language.
 At the age of eight, he wrote "Sa Aking Mga Kababata," which contains the
famous lines, "Ang hindi magmahal sa sariling wika, daig pa ang malansang
isda..."
 At the age of nine, he was able to quote Bible chapters and verses.
 At the age of 13, he received gold medals for rhetoric and his ability to speak
Greek; he also wrote a five-act drama in Spanish verse about St. Estace, the
Martyr.
 At the age of 14, the leader of the "Literary Academy" worked as a director
and actor, capable of speaking in a variety of voices and accents from around
the world; he wrote a long poem titled "The Intimate Alliance between
Religion and Education."
 At the age of 15, he was already proficient in writing poetry and a well-known
philosopher; he wrote the most beautiful religious poem, "Junto al Pasig," a
zarzuela; in less than an hour, he wrote "Felicitation" in Spanish, a seven-
stanza, four-line gift to his brother-in-law Antonio Lopez, husband of Narcisa;
and he also wrote "A Dialogue Embodying His Farewell to the Students,"
which was read during
 At the age of 18, he wrote "A La Juventud Filipina" (Ode to Filipino Youth),
which won the first prize of a silver pen; he also wrote "El Consejo de los
Dioses," a play in honor of Cervantes, which won a prize (a ring engraved
with the bust of Cervantes).

4. How Rizal did gained inspiration from the story of the moth?

 Rizal had always been a keen observer since he was a child. He noticed this
moth while his mother was telling him a story that day. He wasn't particularly
interested in his mother's story, preferring to focus on the moths circling the
flames of their lamp. The flame then accidentally subdued the young moth,
killing it. Jose's mother, on the other hand, was watching him and taught her a
lesson similar to what happened to the moth if he didn't listen to her. Above
all, it was from the story that he learned about obedience.

5. Based on the poem, Sa Aking Mga Kababata, give your insights on how the youth today
profess their confidence and interest in their mother tongue. Does the youth today still
value their native tongue? Explain your answer.

 Jose Rizal wrote "Sa Aking Mga Kabataan" to encourage young people to
use their talents and be the best they can be. He also wrote it to encourage
young people to be proud of who they are, and the first step in doing so is to
communicate or speak in their mother tongue or native language. In my
opinion, every youth values the language that they were raised with, but there
are times when the youth is told to speak English rather than the language
that they were raised with. Schools require students to speak in English the
majority of the time; the only time they can speak in Filipino is when their
subject is in Filipino or when it is their native language. So, how can we
improve our mother tongue skills if we don't use them all the time? As
someone who is still learning about our language, I can say that learning it is
enjoyable because it allows me to learn about its history and origins. Our
language has its own beauty, and in order for us to see it, we must value and
embrace it because it is a part of who we are.

6. Why did Rizal’s parents send him to Binan? What happened to him when he studied
in Binan?

 His father sent him to Bian to continue his Latin studies when he was nine
years old, because his first teacher had died. One Sunday, his brother
Paciano drove him to Bian, Laguna, and Jose said goodbye to his parents
and sisters with tears in his eyes. In Bian, Laguna, he was placed under the
tutelage of Justiniano Aquino Cruz, where he studied Latin and Spanish. In
this town, he also learned to paint under the tutelage of an old painter named
Juancho Carrera. Rizal returned to Calamba on the motorboat Talim after
finishing his studies in Bian. The fact that Jose Rizal was bullied at the age of
nine in Bian's town school is well known for its outcome: Rizal was never
bullied again after he beat the bigger, older boy.
7. Why was the detention of Teodora M. Alonso considered cruel and humiliating?

 Because, according to the text I read, she was accused and the crime was
concocted. Rizal's mother, Teodora, is incapable of committing such a crime
because she teaches Rizal so many moral lessons. Teodora Alonso's
detention was characterized as cruel and humiliating.

8. How was Rizal affected by the Cavite Mutiny?

 The execution of GomBurZa in 1872 as a result of the Cavite Mutiny caused

emotional trauma and was extremely painful for an 11-year-old boy. Rizal's
original plan was to enter the priesthood and become a Jesuit father.
However, as a result of GomBurZa's martyrdom, he changed his mind and
vowed to devote his life to vindicating the victims of Spanish oppression. As a
knowledgeable youth, he has witnessed and experienced killing and violence.
These experiences have shaped him as a man, and he has fought in ways
that he believes will have a significant impact. His novels became instruments
for revolution and nationalism.

Project-based (Individual Thought Paper):

1. Song Analysis (from the Musical, “Sino Ka Ba Jose Rizal?” by Gary Granada,
Bayang Barrios, Noel Cabangon, and Lani Misalucha): Covering Rizal’s life from
birth to early education in Ateneo Municipal).

How did you find the musical on Jose Rizal’s birth, family, childhood & early education?

 The song retells Dr. Jose Rizal's accomplishments and excellence during his
childhood and formal education in Biñan and Anteneo Muniipal. It
demonstrates how bright and talented our national hero was during his entire
lifespan.
 He was a doctor, a painter, a writer, an architect, a sculptor, and a surgeon.
We were able to communicate in two languages, including French, Spanish,
German, Portuguese, and Italian, among others. Rizal is not only an
intelligent man, but he is also attractive. The songs mentioned the ladies in
Rizal's life, including Nellie, Josephine, Leonor, and others.

Are there lessons learned? Give one by citing one song in the musical.

 Gamugamong Munti is the song I chose because it teaches me a lot. One of

the song's lessons is to always obey those older than you, especially your
parents, because they know much better.

2. Write a short biographical essay that compares your early childhood with Rizal’s own.
 My childhood was more peaceful and easy than Rizal's. There is no war; I
can go to school; transportation is faster; the economy has developed; and
most importantly, we are no longer colonized. I'm not sure if my mother taught
me to read and write the alphabet as early as Rizal's mother did. I can assure
you that, just as Rizal's mother taught him moral lessons that he used to
become a better person, my mother did the same for me. My early life was
very different from Jose Rizal's, but he was a good and brilliant man who
grew up in a country that was still in turmoil due to colonization, but he
managed to build himself. I didn't go through the hardships that he did in his
life, so I'm grateful that I was born in the modern era, where everything is
quite normal.
