The learner computes probabilities and percentiles using the standard normal table. (M11/12SP-IIIc-d-1)

Objective:
Compute probabilities and percentiles at the left and right of z using the standard normal table.

Lesson/Topic:
Computing Probabilities and Percentiles at the Left and Right of z Using the Standard Normal
Table.
Quarter No. 3 Week No. 4 Day:3

Activity No. 1. MISSING: LEFT AND RIGHT

Directions: Use the Table of Standard Normal distribution to determine corresponding probabilities of the

4
following problems. Write your solution on the space provided after the unit number.

A. Compute the probability of the given value.

1. P(Z<−1.45)
Solution:
The probability P( Z< 1.45)means to find the area under the normal curve at the left of
z=−1.45 .
P( Z<−1.45)=0.07353
Thus , the probability is 0.07353∨7.35 %

2. P( Z>1.78)
Solution:

The probability P( Z> 1.78) is the same as the area under the normal curve at the left of
z=1.78
z=1.78=0.96246
Thus , the probability is 0.96246∨96.25%

B. For questions 3 to 6 refer to the problem below

X is a normally distributed random variable with a mean of 60 and a standard deviation of 8.

Find the probabilities indicated by using the table. Write your solutions below the item number.
μ=60 , σ=8

3. P ¿)
Solution:

¿ P Z< ( x−μ
σ )
(
¿ P Z<
52−60
8 )
¿ P Z<( −8
8 )
¿ P ( Z ←1 )

P ( Z ←1 )=0.15866

From the table, the probability at the left of 𝑧 = -1 is equal to 0.15866 or 15.87%. This implies that the
probability that a random variable X is less than 52 is 0.15866 or 15.87%.

( )
4. P(X > 57) x−μ
¿ P Z>
Solution: σ

(
¿ P Z>
57−60
8 )
¿ P Z>( −3
8 )
¿ P ( Z >−0.38 )
P ( Z >−0.38 )=0.35197
From the table, the probability at the left of 𝑧 = 0.38 is equal to 0.35197 or 35.92%. This implies that the
probability that a random variable X is greater than 57 is 0.35197 or 35.92%.
5
5. P( X < 68)
Solution:

¿ P Z>( x−μ
σ )
(
¿ P Z>
68−60
8 )
¿ P Z> ( 88 )
¿ P ( Z >1 )
P ( Z >1 )=0.84134
From the table, the probability at the left of 𝑧 = 1 is equal to 0.84134 or 84.13%. This implies that the
probability that a random variable X is greater than 57 is 0.84134 or 84.13%.

Solution:

P(0.5< Z <2.33)
P ( Z <0.5 ) −P(Z <2.33)
0.51994−0.99010
¿−0.47016/−47.02%

2. P(1.25< Z <0.35)
Solution:

P(1.25< Z <0.35)
P ( Z <1.25 )−P (Z <0.35)
0.89435−0.63683
¿ 0.2575/25.75 %

B. Read and analyze each word problem and supply the needed information. Write your solutions after
the item number.

3. X is a normally distributed random variable with a mean of 60 and a standard deviation of 8.

P ( 48< X <64 )
Solution: μ=60 , σ=8

𝑃(48 < 𝑋 < 64)

P ( 48−60

<Z <
8 )
64−60

P (−1.5<Z <0.5 )
¿ P ( Z <0.5 ) −P (Z ←1.5)
¿ 0.51994−0.14686
¿ 0.37308/37.31 %
P(200< X <250)

P
4. The average number of( 200−230 < Z < 250−230 )
10calories in a 10
1.8-oince chocolate bar is 230. Suppose that the distribution of
calorie is approximately normal with a standard deviation of 10.
What is the percentage that P (−3< Z<2 )
a chocolate bar is randomly selected between 200 calories and 250
calories?
¿ P ( Z <2 )−P( Z ←3)
Solution: μ=230 , σ=10
¿ 0.97725−0.00135
¿ 0.9759/97.59 %

Thus, the percentage that a chocolate bar is randomly

selected between 200 and 250 calories is 0.9759/97.59 % .
