Problem Set No. 10

Principle of Virtual Work
Name: Abbey Dale Abellanosa Student ID No: 18XXXX
Schedule: MW 8:30 10:00 AM Date Submitted: October 20, 2020

Instruction: Use Virtual Work Method (Unit Load Method) to analyze the structures shown.
Detailed solution for the member forces of the truss may not be presented. Provide a summary
of your answers.

1. Calculate the horizontal displacement at Joint H if the steel truss is loaded as shown in
Figure 10.1. Vertical members of the truss are 2-L50x50x3mm angle bars while the
horizontal and diagonal members are 2-L35x35x3mm angle bars.

2. A simply-supported beam is subjected to the loading shown in Figure 10.2. The flexural
stiffness of the middle-half of the span is doubled to reduce the midspan deflection.
Determine:
a. the maximum deflection,
b. the slope and deflection at the point where flexural stiffness changes, and
c. the maximum w that can be applied if the maximum allowable deflection is L/360.
