INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 3

Pandemic is challenging
Millions of Filipinos have been out of work for weeks as a result of Covid-19, putting
them in a financial bind. Paying rent and utilities has been a hardship for many people without
a job or the security of knowing when they would return to work. Unemployment benefits
have become a requirement for millions of people as unemployment rates have risen.

Those who are unconcerned about money or who have never considered it have a
distinct advantage. Privilege can be viewed as a bad thing. What matters is what you choose to
do with your privilege. Talking about privilege can be uncomfortable, but the difficulty can also
have the benefit of bringing attention to one's own privilege, which can lead to action to aid
others.

Many jobs were lost when schools began to close and students were forced to leave
their on-campus homes. My parents contribute to the cost of my education, including
accommodation, and food. I don't have to stress about food because my parents are
financially secure enough to assist me. However, millions of students do not have the same
financial stability as me or the same support system.

I was unaware of my liabilities until I began reading more headlines about how millions
of individuals are unable to pay their rent, and landlords are beginning to issue violation
letters. Rather than feel guilty and passive about it, I choose to channel my privilege into a
sense of purpose by donating to NGOs that assist COVID-19 victims, continuing to patronize
local companies, and supporting businesses that donate earnings to COVID-19 victims.
