3850 Certificate in English – The World of Music - Speaking & Listening (Stage 3) 2
Guidance Notes

Speaking & Listening

Standard Jamaican English, which is the target language, must be used during assessment.
In order to enable students to be confident language users, we encourage a bilingual classroom where
students may use Jamaican Creole (JC) and Standard Jamaican English (SJE). In so doing, we are
encouraging students to understand context. We want students to be equally fluent in SJE and JC.

 The Speaking & Listening element will be internally assessed and quality assured.
 The listening activity and the discussion can be assessed on different occasions.
 The candidate can have a maximum of 30 minutes to prepare for the discussion/presentation.
 There will be a small bank of discussion/presentation topics to choose from.
 The presentation should take about 3-4 minutes with additional time allowed for questions
(Activity 1).
 There is no specific required duration to complete the listening activity (Activity 2). There is no
audio file/ recording required at Stage 3 for the listening activity (Activity 2).
 There is a minimum duration required of at least 5 minutes for the discussion activity (Activity 3).

The Speaking & Listening examiner will:

 be fully conversant with the Speaking & Listening activities and the Assessment Record before
conducting the test
 enter marks on the Assessment Record for Activities 1, 2 and 3
 complete the Examiner Comments box giving examples of the candidate’s overall performance.

How to conduct the assessment for Activities 1 and 2

The examiner oversees the whole assessment process and allocates marks on the Assessment Record.
Candidate A is the presenter. Candidate B is the listener. There may be more than one listener but no more than
three listeners should be assessed by the examiner for any one presentation.
Candidate A gives their presentation.
Candidate B completes the evaluation form and gives it to Candidate A.
Candidate A reads the evaluation and completes the reflection form.
Candidates A and B discuss the evaluation and both forms are given to the examiner.

Assessment Record
The Assessment Record is a mark scheme and a record of the marks achieved.
The marking scale provides the number of marks that the candidate can achieve for each criterion.

Full marks demonstrates the candidate meets the criteria consistently at the level.

Most of the time demonstrates consistency at the level with occasional lapses.

Zero marks demonstrates the candidate has not met the required standard at the level.

Examiner Comments
The Examiner Comments box provides a record of candidate’s overall performance.
