Report: Caisson
Caisson

• What is Caisson?
• Caisson is a French name that comes from
"caissee" means a chest or case
• Used to:
✓ retaining water or soil
✓ permanent purposes as a foundation

Caissons types

• Standard caissons
➢ Box
➢ Open
• Pneumatic caissons
Box Caisson
• Construction Procedure:
• Dredge the resting surface and place new
sand layer.
• Simultaneously, prefabricate the first part of
the RC caisson on the shore.
• Float the caisson to location.
• Immerse the caisson by filling it with
aggregates or by pouring concrete wall.
Box Caisson
• A box caisson in such a case was nearly
impossible by that era as it involves replacing
the first layer of organic soil in the river bed
by a layer of sand and the suitable
equipment for such a job weren’t available
by that time.
• Hence constructing a pneumatic caisson
was the only alternative left.

Case Study 2: Method Evaluation
• The cutting mechanism in soil is similar to
that of an box caisson.
• Using half-cylinders at the caisson-cutting
edge transition makes it transported and
sunk as a floating box caisson.
• The sandy soil had a high bearing capacity
but not enough to carry the gigantic weight
while using an opened caisson and
depending totally on the skin friction of the
portion in contact with the soil would have
also been insufficient.
Hence, these caissons had the merits of both types
avoiding the drawbacks of each of them and having
several load transfer mechanisms and also facilitates
floating the first sections of the caisson to the site
