Activity 9: Are We Related?
Directions: Answer the following questions briefly.

1. Refer to the figure above.

a. In what cell organelle does photosynthesis occur? It occurs in the
chloroplast.
b. What are the three reactants needed for photosynthesis? H2O, CO2,
and sunlight.
c. What are the two products of photosynthesis? O2 and glucose.
d. In what cell organelle does cellular respiration occur? It occurs in the
mitochondria.
e. What are two reactants needed for cellular respiration? O2 and glucose.
f. What are three products of cellular respiration? ATP, CO2, and H2O.

2. What four substances are recycled during photosynthesis and respiration? CO2,
O2, H2O, and glucose.
3. What is the one component in photosynthesis that is not recycled and must be
constantly available? Sunlight.
4. Are chloroplasts found in most plant cells? Explain. In most, but not all.
Chloroplasts are present in plant leaves, which allows it to undergo
photosynthesis in a more efficient way as it absorbs sunlight. Since leaves are
the part that is most exposed to sunlight, the chlorophyll can absorb lots of light
and use it for photosynthesis.
5. Are mitochondria found in most plant cells? Explain.Mitochondria is present in
most plant cells. Plants need mitochondria to create energy as mitochondria
generate ATP for photosynthesis.
6. Are chloroplasts found in animal cells? Explain. No, because animal cells don’t
go through photosynthesis. Unlike plants who produce energy themselves,
animals consume other organisms for energy.
7. Are mitochondria found in animal cells? Explain. Yes. Mitochondria is used to
power cells. Cells that need a lot of energy like muscle cells need mitochondria to
store energy. Additionally, mitochondria converts the food consumed by animal
cells into ATP.
8. Compare the reactants and products of photosynthesis with the reactants and
products of respiration. Be ready to share your sentence with the class.
Respiration and photosynthesis both use CO2, O2, H2O, and glucose. However,
they differ in reactants and products. In photosynthesis, the reactants are CO2
and H2O, which then produces O2 and glucose. In cellular respiration, the
reactants are O2 and glucose, which produces CO2 and H2O.
