VERBS
English has several kinds of words, which are called the “parts of speech”: nouns, pronouns,
verbs, adverbs, adjectives, articles, prepositions and conjunctions.
Individual words can become different parts of speech depending on their function in a
sentence. For example, the word mail can be either a noun or a verb.

be the name of a person, an animal, a place, town, city, country, or continent, a

Definition: A pronoun is a word used in replacing nouns. It refers to all types of nouns. It
prevents excessive repetition of a word and it also shows the relationship
between the subject and the object.

Life without parental support can be a disaster. My parents are one of the most amazing people you can find
around the world for all the sacrifices they had made for me. I have great parents, and I still live with them. They
13.
help me with every step of my life. They never turned me down or made excuses about it. They are sweet and
14.
lovely. They love me and they would give their life for me. I thank god that gave me such a great gift. My whole
family came to America only for me before I turned eighteen, so I wouldn’t have to serve in the military for two
15.
years. My parents put a lot of effort and thinking to that, so I can get to America as soon as possible. My parents
16.
quit their jobs. My dad was working as Architect and my mom was working in the hospital. We had one month
to sell the house and everything inside of it before we could come to America. We had a lot of things to sell, and
17.
it was hard to sell all of those things with such little time. The hardest thing was to sell the house because there
weren’t as many customers looking for a house at that time. We flew to Turkey and stayed at the motel for two
days for doctor check-up then from there we flew to America and we arrived in Minnesota in March 24, 1999.
My parents put everything behind and did all of these things only for me. In addition, whenever I need help with
basic things in life they always gave me a positive answer. For example, whenever I need help financially for
school they pay for my tuition because they believe that education is the key to my future. Like this semester
the cost of my classes was about $1500 and they paid for it. In some other cases if I need money to buy gas for
my car to come to school every week they provide me with good amount of money to fill my gas tank and also
my parents provide food at my house, so that I won’t go to sleep hungry.

The past perfect refers to a time earlier than before now. It is used to make it clear that one
event happened before another in the past. It does not matter which event is mentioned first -
the tense makes it clear which one happened first.
In these examples, Event A is the event that happened first and Event B is the second or more
recent event:

The perfect tenses describe actions that have already been completed or that began in the past
and are relevant to the present or that will have happened at a particular time in the future.
They are also referred to as the perfective aspect.
Or in other words, the present perfect is used to indicate a link between the present and the
past. The time of the action is before now but not specified, and we are often more interested
in the result than in the action itself.
▪ An action or situation that started in the past and continues in the present. I have lived in
Bristol since 1984 (= and I still do.)
▪ An action performed during a period that has not yet finished. She has been to the cinema
twice this week (= and the week isn't over yet.)
▪ A repeated action in an unspecified period between the past and now. We have visited
Portugal several times.
▪ An action that was completed in the very recent past, expressed by 'just'. I have just
finished my work.
▪ An action when the time is not important. He has read 'War and Peace'. (= the result of his
reading is important)
Practice A: Fill in the spaces with the correct form of the verb in parentheses in Present
Perfect Tense.
Note: To form the simple present perfect tense, has or have is used with a past participle (the word
that comes after "had") to describe an action that has happened in the past and may still be
happening.
The past participle is often regular, and therefore retains its simple past tense spelling, as “visited”
does here. Example: I / You / We / they (visit) have visited Argentina before.
Practice B: Fill in the spaces with the correct form of the verb in parentheses in Present
Perfect Tense.
Example: John (walk) has walked to school since first grade. He is in fifth grade now.
Example: The girls (finish) have finished cleaning their rooms. Now they can go shopping.
2) The ice on the sidewalk (melt) _______ ________. I think the sun is out today. 3) The
McMillans (prepare) _______ _________ a lot of food for the party. It looks delicious. 4)

6) Sparky (taste) _______ ________ his new dog food, and he seems to like it. 7) The police
(arrest) _______ ________ two men for the robbery. It is time to question them. 8) The
The future perfect is made with the future simple of 'have' (will have) and the past
participle. For regular past participles add 'ed' to the verb ('play' becomes 'played'). Here's
the positive:
By six pm tonight:
By next week,
The future perfect tense refers to a completed action in the future. When we use this tense we
are projecting ourselves forward into the future and looking back at an action that will be
completed some time later than now. It is most often used with a time expression.
EXAMPLES
▪ You will have finished your report by this time next week.
▪ Won't they have arrived by 5:00?
▪ Will you have eaten when I pick you up?
