ANSWERS:

Nationalism and patriotism anchored its goal to the one’s country betterment. These two try to
establish a deep-seated relationship between the people and the community in protecting both its right
and safety from any exploitations or oppressions. In a nutshell, the two carve a vehement and firm
connection in both the people and the country. However, a fine line difference between nationalism and
patriotism is seen or recognized by its specific purpose. The nationalism underscores a unity of cultural
past with inclusion of the language and heritage while patriotism tackles about the love towards people

Analysis of the Poem “ Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa of Andres Bonifacio”

By John Albert Azarse

The poem “ Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa” of Andres Bonifacio illuminates how our progenitors suffered
from their own land under Spanish subjugation. It becomes the instrument in awakening the Filipinos
from the atrocious management of the conquistadors. This poem is composed of 27 stanzas with 4 lines

each stanza. It was originally written in Tagalog, despite influenced by Spanish language, to illuminate
the country’s identity.

In terms of its title, Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa, it directly implies the content of the poem. The title per
se draws the possible ideas that encompassed the entire poem. It gives also the hints to the reader of
what it is all about. One can conclude that this poem is all about the love of one’s own country from
where the author born and live. Then, the speaker can be recognized as someone who is the native. It is
evident that the author shows the idea of nationalism and patriotism of the country. For instance,
ruminate from this 5th stanza from the poem:

Walang mahalagang hindi inihandog

ng may pusong mahal sa Bayangnagkupkop,

dugo, yaman, dunong, katiisa’t pagod,

buhay ma’y abuting magkalagot-lagot.

This simply insinuates that the speaker wanted the reader to be cognizant of how crucial one’s love for
his own country. The speaker or author, Andres Bonifacio, addresses the naïve Filipinos to widely open
their eyes and minds against the opportunist Spaniards. Moreover, the speaker shows a more
convincing mood and tone to uphold the theme of nationalism and patriotism. It is evident that these
two have been the theme on the poem by its glance on the first stanza,

Aling pag-ibig pa ang hihigit kaya

Sa pagka-dalisay at pagkadakila

Gaya ng pag-ibig sa tinubuang lupa?

Alin pag-obig pa? Wala na nga, wala.

Andres Bonifacio insinuates the gist that the love of the country is the greatest love that one could ever
have. People should learn to fight for the love of their own country because it is what they are entitled
to have. This poem instilled a sine qua non message that our country is our source of everything— food,
shelter, right and freedom. Moreover, it is can also be analyzed through historical and psychological
approaches. The former discusses the historical events that transpired under the Spanish colony. It
details how cruel the Spanish people were to the Filipinos. And the latter showcases the behavior of
what Filipinos should be, on how to act and react.
