MODEL

OF A COMMUNITY EXTENSION PROGRAM OF A SCHOOL

The   Commission   on   Higher   Education   (CHED)   specifically   emphasizes

Community   Extension   Service   as   one   of   the   basic   functions   of   a
school/university;   the   two   others   are   Instruction   and   Research.

Research
Instruction

Extension

Figure 1 Functions of a University
It   is   a   primordial   concern   of   a   school   to   provide   a   comprehensive
program   of   community   extension   to   be   participated   by   all   members   of   the
academic and nonteaching personnel and the students. It may also include
the Alumni of the school who can take active part with regard to the financial
concerns of the community projects and activities. Commitment of the school
to   community   service   is   manifested   through   proper   planning,   organizing,
implementation,   and   evaluation,   and   supported   by   a   budget   specifically
allocated   for   its   programs/projects.   Evaluation   of   a   program/project   can   be
useful in coming up with research studies to be undertaken by the students,
teachers,   and   those   in   charge   of   the   community   extension   programs   of   the
school.

The   trilogy   of   functions   of   institutions   of   higher   learning   must   be

mutually coherent and interrelating with each other, i.e. the theories learned
and knowledge acquired in the classroom are put to actual practice. This in
turn   is   assessed   or   evaluated   through   proper   documentation,   drawing   new
information and adding to the body of knowledge. Research work is of no use if
not   tested   or   applied.   Likewise,   the   application   of   research   findings   without
proper   documentation   would   also   become   useless   because   it   cannot   be
translated into new knowledge.
