Social Media

The recent developments in wireless technologies have introduced new means and
directions of communication. Millions of people all over the world are now engaged in political,
economic, cultural, and educational discourses due to the vast expansion of the World Wide
Web. Indeed, social media has transformed people’s lifestyles and has introduced a new pattern
of social interaction. We as a society that thrives on communication, love the ability to share and
talk about information with others. It is a part of our human desire to connect with other people
that share similar preferences, and being a part of a group or a society that share the same
preference, helps that community grow. It is given that social networking is a great means of
communication. It is quick, easy, and simple. It is called social media because it is a digital
exchange of information and conversation that involves socialization through social platforms.
These platforms include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
This is the age of smart phones and micro blogging. Everything that we need to know is
just a click away. Social media is the most widely used tool by all age groups today, but is more
popular among the youth and students. Keeping this in mind researchers feel that social media
can play a very important part in the field of education. It can be used to reach out to many
students and can be highly effective as well. There is a large majority of academic thinkers that
feel social media is a deteriorating agent for students but if used wisely it can be highly effective.
Instead of getting in the argument of social media being good or bad, we must find ways to use it
for our benefit.
